Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of these motor nerves is relatively rare, however, it offers a potential way of protecting nerve integrity and reducing surgical risks in difficult cases. This review article will introduce the recent progress of IONM of six vulnerable motor nerves in lateral neck dissections (LNDs) for thyroid cancers.","PeriodicalId":92168,"journal":{"name":"Annals of thyroid","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21037/AOT.2019.07.04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47899614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Potent antiretroviral therapy can induce abnormalities in thyroid function or it can be related to drug interactions and the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). Increasing prevalence of thyroid dysfunction has been reported in individuals living with HIV (LWHIV). However, there is insufficient evidence to recommend routine thyroid screening of asymptomatic individuals. Hence, in this review we report the common thyroid dysfunctions associated with HIV and in association of anti-retroviral therapy (ART); after critical review of PubMed and Google scholar published-English literature since 1996. HIV can be associated with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and also may increase the risk of thyroid cancer. Emerging evidence also showed that in well treated individuals LWHIV, thyroid function may not be affected by HIV. Therefore, it is a good clinical practice to screen for thyroid function once every 12–24 months. Currently there is little research about the impact of aging in thyroid function in individuals living with HIV. Further research is also needed to establish the value and interval of regular screening of thyroid function in individuals living with HIV.","PeriodicalId":92168,"journal":{"name":"Annals of thyroid","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21037/AOT.2019.07.01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43169394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Super saturated potassium iodide solution (SSKI) is traditionally given about 10 days prior to surgery for patients with Graves’ disease with the goal of decreasing thyroid hormone levels and gland vascularity in addition to any other medication they may be taking for symptoms. Despite the routine administrations, few studies have confirmed these findings. The purpose of this study is to look at a single institution retrospective cohort comparing those patients who undergo thyroidectomy for Graves’ disease with the pre-operative administration of SSKI as compared to those who do not. \u0000 Methods: Single institution review of all patients at a single hospital system undergoing a total thyroidectomy for Graves’ disease receiving SSKI. \u0000 Results: A total of 386 patients had a total thyroidectomy for Graves’ disease between 1999–2016. A total of 308 (79.8%) received SSKI. No statistical differences were noted between the two groups. Of those that received SSKI, there was a significant decreased in both T3 and T4 levels after receiving SSKI (P Conclusions: This study finds that SSKI assists with rendering patients euthyroid prior to total thyroidectomy for Graves’ disease as well as decreases the vascularity of their thyroid glands.","PeriodicalId":92168,"journal":{"name":"Annals of thyroid","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21037/AOT.2019.03.02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42349141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
