Diversity status is needed to conserve the fish resources of the haor region. The present study was conducted to assess fish diversity of the Kalai beel and Naoli beel of Karimganj Upazila in Kishoreganj district, Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: Fish samples were collected from the fishermen and local fish market for taxonomic study from December, 2014-November, 2015. Morphometric and meristic characteristics were identified through direct observation and further identification was done following different books. Results: A total of 46 fish species were identified during the study under 17 families. Among 46 fish species, 15 were found belong to Cyprinidae family followed by Bagaridae (4), Channidae (4), Schilbeidae (3), Mastacembelidae (3), Centropomidae (3), Siluridae (2), Anabantidae (2), Palaemonidae (2) and others (8). During the study period, 22 fish species were marked as abundant species, 15 species were marked as rare and 9 species were found as common species. Conclusion: Ecologically, economically and socially haors are playing essential role with its diversified fish resources. Haor fisheries have great impact on the livelihood of the fishermen and provide nutrition to general people. However, the fish diversity is being threatened by anthropogenic activities. Present study emphasized on the conservation of the fish as it is undergone gradual decrease.","PeriodicalId":92133,"journal":{"name":"Research journal of chemical and environmental sciences","volume":"31 1","pages":"29-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81853997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 80 samples of water were randomly collected from locations in Makurdi which include; high-level, North bank, Wurukum and Wadata and analyzed for bacteria contamination. Microorganisms isolated from the water before treatment include: Escherichia coli (31.92%), Klebsiella spp (11.39%), Diphtheroid spp (13.94%), Staphylococcus aureus (17.89%), Salmonella typhi (9.42%), Enterobacter aerogenes (8.00%) and Streptococcus faecalis (7.44%). The microorganisms isolated after treatment of water with water guard include: Escherichia coli (49.27%), Klebsiella spp (16.79%), Diphtheroid spp (6.57%), Staphylococcus aureus (27.37%). The most prevalent organism in water after treatment was Escherichia coli due to its presence in almost all the locations after treatment. The result shows significant differences in the occurrence of microorganisms present in untreated and treated water samples at p<0.05. Some of the bacteria isolated before treatment of water with water guard were not seen after treatment. Monitoring of the effect of exposure time of the microbes to water guard is advocated.","PeriodicalId":92133,"journal":{"name":"Research journal of chemical and environmental sciences","volume":"72 1","pages":"364-369"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86342492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, the performance of Electro-Fenton (EF) method using iron electrodes on the oxidation of phenol was studied. This experimental study was performed in batch reactor and the effect of operating parameters such as solution pH, operating time, applied current, H2O2 and phenol concentration was investigated. In this study the H2O2 is manually added while a disposal iron anode is applied as a ferrous ion source. Experimental data indicated that pH, H2O2 and phenol concentration have principal role in the process. The results show that removal efficiency of phenol decreased with increasing pH, so that the maximum efficiency 26% was obtained at pH 10, also decreasing of H2O2 concentration decreased the efficiency. Optimal condition for removing 100% of phenol was found after 30 min of reaction at pH = 3.0, H2O2 concentration 100 mg LG1 and 5 mA cmG2. Electro-Fenton process using iron electrodes for phenol degradation and remediation of wastewater is a promising process in terms of environmental and low-cost features.","PeriodicalId":92133,"journal":{"name":"Research journal of chemical and environmental sciences","volume":"64 1","pages":"332-341"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81372631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
