This quantity arises in a large deviations analysis of a Markov chain on the set of types - the Wright-Fisher model of neutral genetic drift: a population with allele distribution q produces offspring with allele distribution w, which then produce offspring with allele distribution p, and so on. The chained divergences enjoy some of the same properties as the K-L divergence (like joint convexity in the arguments) and appear in k-step versions of some of the same settings as the K-L divergence (like information projections and a conditional limit theorem). We further characterize the optimal k-step \"path\" of distributions appearing in the definition and apply our findings in a large deviations analysis of the Wright-Fisher process. We make a connection to information geometry via the previously studied continuum limit, where the number of steps tends to infinity, and the limiting path is a geodesic in the Fisher information metric. Finally, we offer a thermodynamic interpretation of the chained divergence (as the rate of operation of an appropriately defined Maxwell's demon) and we state some natural extensions and applications (a k-step mutual information and k-step maximum likelihood inference). We release code for computing the objects we study.
","PeriodicalId":92129,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The new linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) RAKE receiver is an enhancement to the previously published decorrelating RAKE (D-RAKE) receiver. Compared with the D-RAKE receiver, the LCMV-RAKE receiver processes full information of the desired user and is shown by simulations to have lower bit error rates. Furthermore, the LCMV-RAKE receiver is not limited to the quasi-synchronous model, where the maximum delay spread is assumed to be small compared to the symbol duration.","PeriodicalId":92129,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The decoder utilizes a method of recursively reading from a set of lookup-tables and storing the data bytes temporarily in memory for later recursions/iterations. The sizes of the lookup-tables can be reasonably small for PCCCs consisting of 2-state constituent encoders. A class of 2-state PCCCs is given that utilizes feedforward-enhancement to achieve excellent bit error rate performance even when decoded with the recursive table-lookup decoder.","PeriodicalId":92129,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. By providing retransmission diversity of the collided packets, these protocols offer the means to improve upon random splitting-based collision resolution protocols, at a moderate complexity cost. In this paper, we find sufficient conditions for stability of (B)NDMA by using the dominant system approach, developed for stability analysis of finite population slotted ALOHA. We reconsider the steady-state analysis, bypassing the earlier generating function approach, so that we can deal with asymmetry (multirate systems). This yields expressions for throughput and delay per queue. We also generalize BNDMA and the associated stability analysis to multicode systems.","PeriodicalId":92129,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. With respect to the iterative decoding scheme, several equivalent mathematical formulations are derived to facilitate the stability analysis, based on which we show that turbo decoding with Max-Log-MAP has at least one fixed point but is in general suboptimal and may not even converge. Finally, some conditions are given to guarantee the convergence of the iterative turbo decoding.","PeriodicalId":92129,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The equivalence of the Bayes retrochannel to a spin glass allows the optimal bit-error-rate to be determined exactly in the large-system limit by studying macroscopic properties of the spin glass using tools developed in statistical mechanics. It is found that all users, regardless of their individual received energies, enjoy the same multiuser efficiency, which is directly related to the mean-square error of the conditional mean estimator.","PeriodicalId":92129,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The condition of generalized posterior distributions is not given by the deterministic values such as X = x, but by the distributions such as P(X = x) = p. If the condition is P(X = x) = 1 then the generalized posterior distribution is an ordinary posterior distribution. A procedure using the sum of the e-projection 1 vectors is proposed. Since the procedure is suitable for parallel algorithms, an alternate algorithm for calculating generalized posterior distributions on log linear models is given by the procedure. The proposed algorithm works well for codes with short loops.","PeriodicalId":92129,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
