In this paper, we illustrate a simulation tool designed for modeling communications at nanoscales. This tool is fully adaptable to all nano-scale bearers, used to transport information, which may range from electromagnetic waves to calcium ions. In addition, it can be easily adapted to the interested environment. In this paper, we illustrate an example of the simulator functions by modeling a portion of a lymph node, and simulating the information transfer during the humoral immune response by antibody molecules.","PeriodicalId":91990,"journal":{"name":"... For instance, hearing loss is the third impairment of the elderly after arthritis and hypertension. The MIOCARDIA project is a multidisciplinary project in cooperation with the Computer Vision Center, l'Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau, Clínica Creu Blanca and Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The ultimate goal of this project is defining a computational model of the myocardium. The model takes into account the deep interrelation between the anatomy and the mechanics of the heart. The paper explains the workflow of the MIOCARDIA project. It also introduces a multiresolution reconstruction technique based on DT-MRI streamlining for simplified global myocardial model generation. Our reconstructions can restore the most complex myocardial structures and provides evidences of a global helical organization.","PeriodicalId":91990,"journal":{"name":"... The orthosis is intended to provide gait assistance for incomplete spinal cord injured patients that present functional hip muscles, but partially denervated knee and ankle muscles. It consists of a passive compliant joint that constrains ankle plantar flexion, along with a powered knee unit that prevents knee flexion during stance and controls flexion-extension during swing. For this purpose, the knee joint incorporates a controllable mechanical locking system and an electrical DC motor that actuate independently. The prototype is equipped with different sensors (plantar sensors and angular encoders) for control purposes. They are used to identify the main events defining the gait phases and to provide feedback measurements for the motor control system.","PeriodicalId":91990,"journal":{"name":"... The intended application is classification and analysis of the tissue composition of skin lesions or ulcers, in terms of granulation (red), fibrin (yellow), necrotic (black), callous (white), and mixed tissue composition. The images were analyzed and classified by an expert dermatologist into the classes mentioned above. Indexing of the images was performed based on statistical texture features derived from cooccurrence matrices of the RGB, HSV, L*a*b*, and L*u*v* color components. The classification was performed using different classifiers and database organization methods. The performance of classification was measured in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, with values of up to 0.98 for the granulation and fibrin classes.","PeriodicalId":91990,"journal":{"name":"... An interesting solution for passive localization and navigation is given by monostatic wireless sensor radar (WSR) networks. In this context, ultrawide band (UWB) radar provide fine delay resolution enabling high accuracy localization also in harsh environments such as indoor. We present a mathematical framework for analysis and design of passive navigation based on UWB monostatic WSRs that relies on environment propagation and time-of-arrival estimation characterized by network experiments. A case study where a UWB monostatic WSR network is deployed to infer the position of moving target objects is considered. In particular, Bayesian navigation based on particle filters implementation is analyzed and the role of mobility model for inferring target position is shown.","PeriodicalId":91990,"journal":{"name":"... The system consists of a transmitter (Alice) and a receiver (Bob) that are connected through a free-space quantum channel over a distance of approximately 50 m, and are each driven by a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The raw key shared by Alice and Bob is processed in four subsequent steps (i.e., sifting, channel estimation, key reconciliation and privacy amplification) which are implemented in Matlab. Finally, public discussion is implemented with the user datagram protocol (UDP) transport protocol running over the Internet protocol (IP) network protocol, while 802.11g underlies the physical layer transmission.","PeriodicalId":91990,"journal":{"name":"...
