Although OUD is prevalent among justice-involved populations, their attitudes toward MAT are largely unknown. Injectable extended release naltrexone (XR-NTX) is a MAT option, that is, unlike others, an opioid antagonist. We assess beliefs about XR-NTX as compared to methadone, a gold-standard pure opioid agonist MAT modality, in a sample of incarcerated men and women. Self-report data were collected from randomly selected adults (n = 1,570) residing in therapeutic communities (TCs) in 23 state correctional facilities. Distinct instruments addressed XR-NTX (n = 830) and methadone (n = 741). Prior knowledge and exposure to XR-NTX, and race, were significantly associated with positive beliefs about XR-NTX. Addiction history, race, beliefs about behavioral change, and a preference for injection over oral medications were positively associated with the average likelihood of opting for post-release XR-NTX treatment. Implications for health and correctional policy are discussed.","PeriodicalId":91861,"journal":{"name":"Corrections : policy, practice and research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23774657.2021.1884032","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47773186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet there has been little research on critical contraband issues. Using descriptive analyses of the 2018 National Survey of Correctional Contraband, a data collection effort involving 301 prisons across six state departments of corrections, the current paper addresses these knowledge gaps through a multi-state, scholarly examination of contraband. We found that prisons recovered an average of 34 weapons, 31 cell phones, and 28 controlled substances over the 12-month study period. Respondents also noted that both staff and visitors were conduits for illicit items in prisons, though they reported more staff violations than visitor violations for contraband-related incidents. Finally, we found that agencies employed a mix of strategies and policies to prevent, detect, and remove contraband from their prisons. We discuss the implications of our work for policy and future research.","PeriodicalId":91861,"journal":{"name":"Corrections : policy, practice and research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23774657.2021.1906356","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44053864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stress can contribute to myriad professional and personal challenges such as depression, poor physical health, family conflict, and decreased life/job satisfaction. In efforts to develop wellness trainings specifically for corrections staff, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC) conducted a small, exploratory pilot test of a mindfulness training program with a randomized sample (N = 56) of facility- and community-based corrections staff. Without correcting for multiple tests in exploratory analyses, assessments collected at baseline and approximately 4 weeks later found statistically significant differences for several of the 19 questionnaires, specifically addressing mindfulness, fatigue, positive affect, decision-making, and resilience. After applying a Bonferroni correction, significance disappeared. This small exploratory pilot suggests the potential of mindfulness training for improving several functional domains in corrections staff in efforts to increase wellness.","PeriodicalId":91861,"journal":{"name":"Corrections : policy, practice and research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23774657.2021.1900756","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48948032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study examines 500 incidents that occurred at an all-male, maximum security prison in order to test for racial differences in use of force, net of situational characteristics such as the incarcerated person’s behavior. The results of binary logistic regression models show that physical force was used more often against nonwhites, while pinion restraints were used more often against White people than Black people. The use of chemical irritant and cell extractions, as well as a combined measure of total use of force, did not vary by race. Furthermore, race moderated the effects of some situational characteristics on total use of force; racial disparities may be the result of unconscious bias that shapes correctional officers’ reactions to incidents involving incarcerated people of color.","PeriodicalId":91861,"journal":{"name":"Corrections : policy, practice and research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23774657.2021.1900757","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45321733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current research provides an examination of a halfway houses attempt to adhere to the risk-need-responsivity model and the difficulties that are experienced when model fidelity is lacking. To better analyze the impact of the race, ethnicity, or gender of the defendant, the current study analyzes cases where the safety valve could have been applied in three different models being race/ethnicity of the defendant, legal factors, and then extra-legal factors to understand the judge’s decision-making on applying the safety valve provision under 18 U.S.C. §3553(f). The findings show evidence of racial and gender disparity. Both Black defendants and Black male defendants are less likely to have the safety valve applied in their cases than White defendants and White male defendants. Most prior work has focused on justice system exposure and the accumulation of fines, fees, and costs. This study assesses whether owing criminal court debt is a factor in keeping people tied to the justice system in the short-term yet critical window after release from prison. In addition, I examine whether being under supervision (i.e., probation or parole) increases the chance of owing court-related debt. Relying on longitudinal survey data from the Returning Home Study, results suggest the existence of a feedback loop whereby one’s status as being under correctional supervision at release from prison leads to increased debt, which in turn increases the chance of remaining under supervision during the first year out. The findings have implications for law and policy and raise important questions about the role of revenue generation in criminal justice.","PeriodicalId":91861,"journal":{"name":"Corrections : policy, practice and research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23774657.2021.1878072","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44673591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite their widespread use, there is little research examining the impacts of pretrial release programming on offender recidivism after pretrial. This study analyzed data from 286 individuals who participated in an Eastern Pennsylvania county’s adult probation and parole pretrial supervision program between 2014 and 2016. Relevant predictors of pretrial failure as well as predicting arrest 36 months after the pretrial program were examined. Results suggested that criminal history and education level are the main predictors of pretrial failure. Those with more education and with no criminal history are less likely to fail supervised pretrial release. Unexpectedly, those with higher education were more likely to be arrested 36 months after pretrial. Younger individuals were slightly more likely to be arrested, and those who failed to complete the pretrial program were 2.5 times more likely to be arrested after pretrial. Overall, these findings provide support for the potential role of pretrial release programming in reducing recidivism beyond the pretrial phase. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.","PeriodicalId":91861,"journal":{"name":"Corrections : policy, practice and research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23774657.2021.1878071","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43320917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, they continue to face inequality in the home, where they shoulder a disproportionate share of domestic responsibilities. Referred to as “the second shift” by Hochschild in 1989, these ascribed gender roles remain resistant to change. Based on surveys and interviews with members of the Association of Women Executives in Corrections (AWEC), this study examines how the challenges of achieving a work-life balance impacts women’s desires for, or ability to, compete for promotion in the field of corrections. The authors found that women corrections executives cited difficulties in achieving a work-life balance as a primary challenge to serving in executive-level roles. But despite their own professional accomplishments, they believed that the challenge of achieving a work-life balance remains a primary reason that women continue to be underrepresented as corrections executives. Study implications suggest that family friendly policies and support at the departmental level, for both men and women, might encourage more women to apply to the executive ranks.","PeriodicalId":91861,"journal":{"name":"Corrections : policy, practice and research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23774657.2020.1868360","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46226516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
