It starts with a brief historical review before concentrating on the contemporary Greek society. While exposing the lack of substantial empirical evidence, including psychological, it discusses the basis and the extent of societal and institutional homophobia within the Greek context. The review continues with an exploration of contemporary Greek gay identity and community. The conflict between Greek cultural values and acceptance of sexual diversity in the country as well as the potential negative effects of this conflict on sexual minorities are highlighted. The review concludes by exposing the lack of any contribution by Greek psychologists and of their professional bodies in addressing issues faced by sexual minorities in the country. A strong recommendation is made for Greek psychologists to play their part in facilitating the process that leads to changing homophobic attitudes and legislation and, therefore, help affected communities and people.","PeriodicalId":91790,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of sexualities review","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85252729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We situate this on critical events leading to: (1) an official policy by the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) against anti-LGBT discrimination in 2011, the first in south-east Asia; and (2) the institutionalisation in 2014 of the PAP’s LGBT Psychology Special Interest Group. Organising efforts have focused in four areas: research, education, advocacy, and practice. National conferences have served as naturally occurring moments for mainstreaming and visibility within the profession. Research progress is evidenced by the publication in 2013 of a special LGBT issue of the Philippine Journal of Psychology. Education efforts have involved teaching an undergraduate elective on LGBT psychology, training of psychology teachers to integrate sexual and gender diversity, and conduct of ‘LGBT Psych 101’ seminars. Advocacy has focused on ‘giving away’ LGBT psychology through engagement with the activist community, media, and support for anti-discrimination legislation. Finally, initial work in professional practice has been around raising awareness of LGBT issues in counselling. We reflect on these initial successes and present lessons learned as well as next steps for the development of an LGBT-inclusive psychology in south-east Asia.","PeriodicalId":91790,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of sexualities review","volume":"80 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90469547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Minority stress research has explained adverse health outcomes in LGBT populations and health disparities between LGBT and heterosexual cisgender populations. Recent shifts in the social environment of LGBT people in some regions of the world allow the experience a more accepting and inclusive society. These changes require that social scientist adapt their research agenda. The author calls for researchers to explore changes in stigma and prejudice toward sexual and gender minorities; assess the impact of changes in the social environment on the lived experiences of LGBT persons across generations and intersections of race/ethnicity, gender and gender expression, and socioeconomic status; describe changes in stress and coping of LGBT people; and examine whether social changes lead to reduction in health disparities by sexual orientation and gender diversity.","PeriodicalId":91790,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of sexualities review","volume":"46 1","pages":"81-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80065204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our review demonstrates that stigma, victimisation and familial rejection in Thailand are linked to stress, depression, substance use and suicidality among Thai LGBT people. Research has insufficiently covered transgender men, bisexuals and intersex people. Access to mental health services and their appropriateness are impeded by generic factors (e.g. overcrowded services, stigma, and confidentiality concerns) and low practitioner knowledge of LGBT issues, stereotyping of LGBT clients, and anticipation of practitioners not being accepting or understanding LGBT identities. LGBT-related policy statements have been issued by state-affiliated bodies, but not by professional associations. While sometimes supportive, many policy documents have used stigmatising terminology and perpetuated anti-LGBT prejudice. LGBT-specific counselling and health services have been established, therapeutic strategies have been investigated and information on LGBT issues has been disseminated, but LGBT sensitivity remains to be mainstreamed in Thai health and counselling services. Providing training on LGBT issues, publicising the Yogyakarta Principles and getting professional associations engaged with LGBT issues are among the ways forward.","PeriodicalId":91790,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of sexualities review","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88500624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
