Objectives: The present study aimed to assess the effects of nursing education through the PBL method on patient safety-based communication skills in nursing students. Patients and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 78 fourth-year nursing students. The participants were divided into intervention (n=43) and control (n=35) groups. In the intervention groups, the educational content based on the PBL method was provided in eight sessions (45-60 minutes each). Data were collected using demographic and patient safety-based communication skills questionnaires. Results: No significant difference was observed in the mean score of patient safety-based communication skills in the control groups after the intervention (P=0.162). However, the intervention groups had significantly higher scores after the educational sessions (P=0.001). Conclusion: The implementation of the PBL method affected the patient safety-based communication skills of the nursing students. Thus, it is recommended that conventional teaching methods be replaced by PBL to improve the clinical and cognitive capabilities of nursing students.","PeriodicalId":91739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of epidemiology and preventive medicine","volume":"61 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79342308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each year, 80000 children in the United States suffer from appendicitis. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate diagnostic value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in younger and older pediatrics suspect of acute appendicitis in Imam Hossein hospital. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted at Imam Hossein hospital from 2015-2017. The study population was all children with suspected appendicitis who refer to Imam Hossein medical center in Isfahan. The sample size was 423 people. The collected data were imported into SPSS software version 22 and analyzed with appropriate statistical tests. The significance level in the present study was less than 0.05. Results: The average age of participants was 7.2 ± 3.8 years. In both study groups, it was observed that the mean NLR in the normal and reactive follicular groups was significantly lower than the appendicitis and complication groups (P<0.05). The results of the present study showed that NLR diagnostic test can be a good predictor for the evaluation of appendicitis in both groups under 4 years and over 4 years. For more than 4 years’ group; AUC=0.74, P<0.001 and for less than 4 years’ group; AUC=0.69, P<0.001. For less than 4 years’ group, the cut-off score for appendicitis diagnosis was 2.3. In this cut-off, the sensitivity and specificity were equal to 0.65% and 0.72%. Additionally, for more than 4 years’ group, the cut-off for the diagnosis of appendix was 3.5. In this cut-off, the sensitivity and specificity were equal to 0.73% and 67%. Conclusion: This analysis demonstrates that NLR, in the context of appropriate clinical assessment of patients with a high a priori probability of appendicitis, has a greater diagnostic accuracy in supporting the diagnosis of appendicitis.","PeriodicalId":91739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of epidemiology and preventive medicine","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75462954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: The present review attempted to assess the admission rate, treatment protocols, and outcome changes in patients suffering ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the COVID-19 outbreak. Materials and Methods: The included studies were identified through electronically reviewing the manuscripts databases of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of knowledge, and Google Scholar from inception to September 2020. The titles and abstracts of the manuscripts were screened by two blinded reviewers followed by an in-depth assessment of the full texts for assigning the inclusion appropriateness. Results: Eighteen articles (including 6225 STEMI patients hospitalized within the COVID-19 pandemic duration and 55711 STEMI patients in pre-COVID-19 periods) were desirable for the final analysis. A longer delay among symptom onset and first medical contact (FMC) in the COVID-19 lockdown period than before the COVID-19 pandemic was revealed. Comparing STEMI-related death in the COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 duration showed a significantly higher death rate and a higher rate of thrombolytic therapy. The examined pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 periods showed a reduction in STEMI patients’ admissions reached 30.9%. Additionally, entering the COVID-19 period resulted in a significant 44.4% reduction in the number of primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the management of STEMI has undergone significant changes, including reduced hospital admissions, reduced invasive and semi-invasive treatment interventions, increased STEMI-related mortality, increased thrombolytic therapy, and delayed patients’ referral to the hospitals.","PeriodicalId":91739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of epidemiology and preventive medicine","volume":"239 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89609343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

B. Beladi Mousavi, F. Hayati, E. Valavi, Isa Rezaee, Shokouh Shayanpour, Leila Sabetnia","doi":"10.34172/jpe.2020.28","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.34172/jpe.2020.28","url":null,"abstract":"A number of therapies are prescribed for the treatment of COVID-19, but none of them have proven efficacy. In this review article, we summarized the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties, effect and potential toxicity of Kaletra (combination of lopinavir and ritonavir) among kidney transplant (KTP) patients who have COVID-19. We used a variety of sources by searching through PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Current Content to collect current data about our issue. Articles published in the English language, as full-text manuscripts, and or as abstract form were included in the study. Lopinavir and ritonavir are two structurally related novel protease inhibitors which have antiretroviral properties. They have primarily been used as part of combination therapy for the treatment of HIV, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV viruses. However, it seems that use of Kaletra is not associated with clinical improvement, or reduces mortality among patients including KTP recipients who have laboratory-confirmed COVID-19. On the other hand, co-administration of Kaletra with medications that are commonly used among KTP recipients including calcineurin inhibitors and mTOR inhibitors has profound drug-drug interactions. Co-administration of Kaletra with these medications could lead to significant and unexpected increase of blood concentrations of both calcineurin and mTOR inhibitors and therefore frequent monitoring of the immunosuppressive drugs concentrations are necessary to optimize immunosuppressive therapy and prevention of toxicity. It is important to note that frequent monitoring of the immunosuppressive drugs concentration is expensive and also not easily available in many countries including our country. According to the above important points, we recommend that use of Kaletra among KTP patients who have laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 should be avoided especially among patients who are still on calcineurin and mTOR inhibitors.","PeriodicalId":91739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of epidemiology and preventive medicine","volume":"40 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84481336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: This study aimed to study the kidney function remaining in living kidney donors and its related factors. Patients and Methods: Data were collected from 30 kidney donors in Imam Khomeini hospital in Urmia and evaluated using SPSS-22 software. Results: The mean duration of nephrectomy was 36.36 ± 6.22 years. The mean serum creatinine was significantly increased at the time of examination than before donation, and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decreased significantly (P<0.001). Male donors (P=0.025) and donors who did not have relative relationship with the recipient (P=0.44) had better kidney function. The renal function at the time of examination was 74.86% amount before donation. The glucose tolerance test (mg/dL 2 hours) of the donors increased significantly at the time of the study compared to the time before donation (P=0.049). Conclusion: The remaining kidney function of the donors has decreased significantly seven years after donation. It seems that kidney donors need more time to excrete excess glucose, so they are far from being over-carbohydrate.","PeriodicalId":91739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of epidemiology and preventive medicine","volume":"16 3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72723372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
