These changes arise out of increased emphasis on liberalization and open market systems has transformed the orientation of domestic general insurance markets from that of sellers to a buyer's market. In the past two decades of post privatization operations, the sector has witnessed many challenges in terms of performance. The present study attempts to provide an insight into the behavior of the variables, which determines the performance of general insurance business in India. The formulation of econometric models based on the behavior of the variables influencing the performance of general insurance business in India across the segments of fire marine and miscellaneous will facilitate better decision-making and risk management processes of the players in the industry. The findings of the study are likely to help the policy formulators in bringing needed modifications to the existing policy and provisions to give further boost to the industry.","PeriodicalId":91714,"journal":{"name":"International journal of risk and contingency management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4018/IJRCM.2019040102","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44336931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors focus on publicly-owned manufacturers with at least 1,000 employees in California over the period 1970–2015 to examine the value implications of self-insurance adoption. This study employs a treatment-effects model to simultaneously estimate the determinants of self-insurance and the effect of self-insurance on firm value. The authors find that the relationship between firm value and self-insurance is time dependent. Risk preference for self-insurance reflects in higher market valuation among manufacturers over the periods of 1970–1983 and 1986–1999. These results suggest that self-insurance has a positive impact on firm value in the 1970s through the 1990s except for the liability crisis years 1984–1985. However, the benefits of self-insurance fail to materialize for self-insured manufacturers in the 2000s.","PeriodicalId":91714,"journal":{"name":"International journal of risk and contingency management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4018/IJRCM.2019010104","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45889313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reason for this is apparent: managers in corporate entities cannot predict all circumstances, whether positive or negative, that is likely to occur in the future. Management during the decision-making process must be able to make informed decisions given the existence of insecurities and uncertainties in the course of business operations. Management must, therefore, take into account the risks that might occur in the future. As a result, this article aims at discussing the risks affecting corporate entities. The paper also defines and analyzes the risks, thus explaining how business entities can tackle them through making informed business decisions.","PeriodicalId":91714,"journal":{"name":"International journal of risk and contingency management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4018/IJRCM.2019010103","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42194393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A project-based organization, in general, faces several difficulties in the implementation of ERM due to the diversity of risk associated with several projects. From a system thinking perspective, a project-based organization needs an integrated approach to interrelate the isolated processes of diverse projects. The issues are related to fuzzy picture of integration, such as, the difference between ERM and PRM processes, how to integrate the two concepts, what happens if integration process goes wrong, as well as issues with risk technologies and change in risk culture. The article provides informal and formal approaches to integration of ERM and PRM. Successful integration requires not only an understanding the value of integration, improvement in risk culture, but needs a learning-based approach to improve risk expertise, interaction, team building, and decision making.","PeriodicalId":91714,"journal":{"name":"International journal of risk and contingency management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47569223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, the ‘objective' approach is numeric, probabilistic and focused on the risk itself; it is concerned with people in general rather than in individual terms. Secondly, the ‘subjective' approach recognizes that risk issues have personal and individual dimensions. It is argued that the progress achieved by technical advances in project management are being stalled by failure to make similar advances in addressing Human Factors. Reliance on ever-tightening controls and micro-managing workplace behavior or pursuing zero safety incidents can be counterproductive both for compliance and for the bottom line if individual risk dispositions are not part of the solution. Professional, regulatory and standards bodies increasingly emphasize employee participation and risk leadership as important for the mutual trust and respect necessary for safety objectives to be fully realized. This article reports how Risk Type is impacting these issues.","PeriodicalId":91714,"journal":{"name":"International journal of risk and contingency management","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4018/IJRCM.2018100102","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42158026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Agile enables us to take calculated risks during development whereas its affinity to adopting DevOps will promote continuous delivery with reduced friction to improve business efficiency. As this approach requires a change in people, process, technology, culture, usage of right tools and techniques, the early involvement of IT Auditors during the process of transformation could aid to build effective Risk Management strategies to handle organizational challenges. Preventive action becomes an automatic process when a management system is risk-based. The contingency approach to management will make fruitful results once it is considered as more explicit and builds it into strategic plan of the management system with upfront planning with the help of business models. In the strategic plan of any organization, leadership and administration plays an important role. By identifying the context related risks, leaders can analyze the opportunities in terms of impact and feasibility and plan towards prioritizing the risks to act on. In this direction, the need for a business model which focuses on efficient process-based approach towards risk prioritization, thereby prevention and avoidance is proposed, which demonstrates management their leadership, and commitment to the quality management of higher education.","PeriodicalId":91714,"journal":{"name":"International journal of risk and contingency management","volume":"7 1","pages":"68-89"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4018/IJRCM.2018100104","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47591846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
