It is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity isn’t just a cosmetic concern. It’s a medical problem that increases the risk of other diseases and health prob-lems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancer. Besides, it has been pointed out as a vital cause of kidney diseases. Due to its close association with diabetes and hypertension, excess weight and obesity are important risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Early dietary intervention should be considered in the man-agement of overweight and obese chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients to reduce weight, and where necessary bariatric surgery. Further studies are required to better under-stand the association between obesity and kidney disease.","PeriodicalId":91556,"journal":{"name":"Journal of obesity and weight-loss medication","volume":"28 7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89864737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These numbers have substantially increased since 2008. Obesity-related health conditions include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer. This disease is preventable, and can be reversed if providers take action now. Research shows that obesity can be managed with diet, exercise and sometimes medications, but education needs to start at the primary care level. Objective: The objectives for this project were to increase provider knowledge and confidence in the evaluation and treatment of obesity utilizing the 5As behavioral model framework for obesity, which will help reduce obesity rates in our communities. Methods: This project was implemented at a Federally Qualified Healthcare Center (FQHC) serving a high-risk population for obesity due to local demographics. This FQHC serves a lower socioeconomic population, in addition to the racial and ethnic populations which are more prone to higher rates of obesity. The project consisted of a protocol put into place for the providers and interdisciplinary staff members. An educational session was held for the provider to educate on standard of care guidelines for obesity management as well as the 5As behavioral model framework for obesity. Both preand post-knowledge tests were given at this session. Preand post-intervention confidence surveys were also implemented. The interdisciplinary staff members also received an educational session for correct skill techniques for obtaining certain obesity measurements such as blood pressure, weight, height, BMI and waist circumference. A preand post-observational evaluation was also implemented within this educational session. The intervention and practice change protocol included having providers evaluate and address individual patient factors contributing to obesity in a 30 minute visit for patients with body mass index > 30 kg/m2. All 50 patient participants signed the informed consent forms. Results: It was observed that the intervention and protocol implemented did increase provider compliance by 84% shown from descriptive statistics analysis, while knowledge in the evaluation and management of obesity in the primary care clinic setting increased post-intervention by a mean difference of 8.43 based off a parametric t-test. The provider confidence levels both preand postwere broken into three different subscales based on agreeance, comfort and rate, and analyzed by either descriptive frequencies or reliability and item analysis based on the Cronbach’s alpha using SPSS software. The post confidence mean differences reported were 8.85 in the comfort subscale and a mean difference of 6 in the rate subscale. Therefore, the post mean differences support increased confidence in weight management, while the agreeance subscale of three questions was individually analyzed due to low reliability. Conclusion: These results will help redu","PeriodicalId":91556,"journal":{"name":"Journal of obesity and weight-loss medication","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74610373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People wrongly perceive central obesity as an indicator of wealth group in western Ethiopian; however it is a midfielder for cardio-metabolism disorders. Thus, study aimed to assess the prevalence of overweight, obesity and associated factors among middle aged urban residents of west Ethiopia. Methods: A community based cross sectional study was applied. Data was collected from 266 participants as of world health organization approach in February 2019. Statistical package for social science version 24 was used to analyze. Descriptive statistical analysis was reported with frequency, percentage and mean ± standard division. A binary logistic analysis resulting with P < 0.25 candidate to multivariable and significant association was considered at p-value ≤ 0.05. Results: The prevalence of overweight, obesity and its combined index was 19.5%, 24.4% and 43.9% respectively. Based on Ethiopian references for waist circumference, about 58.6% adults were at risk of developing central obesity. The mean and standard division of twelve food groups was 5.4 ± 1.9. On binary analysis, being raised (systolic blood pressure; P = 0.034, diastolic blood pressure; P = 0.090, fasting blood sugar; P = 0.013), and high dietary diversity score (P = 0.038) were associated with central obesity. On multivariate analysis being: Raised triglycerides (P < 0.001); elevated diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.047) and high dietary diversity score (AOR = 1.52; 95% CI: 1.122.25) were associated with central obesity, but dietary diversity was not significant (P = 0.379). Conclusion: Both general and central obesity was highly prevalent and associated significantly with independent variables. Consequently, age targeted Nutrition education needs attention to reduce the prevalence and complications from obesity related diseases.","PeriodicalId":91556,"journal":{"name":"Journal of obesity and weight-loss medication","volume":"86 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83557671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ubiquity of online-shoppable weight-loss supplements and their unrestricted consumption by people with obesity are serious matters of concern. Fucoxanthin, a brown-seaweed-extracted carotenoid has exhibited anti-obesity property in some clinical trials through its ability to over express uncoupling protein (UCP1) in the white adipose tissue, which leads to fat burning. However, since the clinical trials apply pure fucoxanthin instead of fucoxanthin-bearing dietary supplements, a critical analysis is warranted to quantify fucoxanthin in brown seaweeds to validate their rationale in weight loss mechanism. This study examined ten randomly chosen online-sourced brands of fucoxanthin-containing dietary supplements and analyse the content using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) equipped with UV-Vis and photodiode array detector. Our exploration revealed that, of these 10 products, 3 (30%) did not have any detectable quantity of fucoxanthin, 5 (50%) contained a only a trace amount of it, ranging from 0.001-0.01 mg per capsule, and only 2 (20%) products contained 0.4 mg or 2 mg of fucoxanthin, meeting their label claim. This worrying finding may be interpreted that the existing ease-of-access and pervasive nature of online-sourced dietary supplements require more stringent regulatory screening.","PeriodicalId":91556,"journal":{"name":"Journal of obesity and weight-loss medication","volume":"69 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77776357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is a common method to determine surgical risk, but at first glance it appears to be insufficient to determine the risk of morbid obesity surgery. The greatest advantage of Obesity Surgery Mortality Risk Score (OSMRS) is the use of five easily obtained clinical variables. A possible disadvantage is that it may only show mortality. It was reported that OS-MRS can be used for morbidity. However, there are inconsistent results. In this study, we aimed to compare the preoperative OS-MRS results with postoperative Clavien-Dindo for ASA III patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and to show the predictive power of the OS-MRS for morbidity in this group. Material-Method: The study retrospectively included patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obesity from 2014 to 2018. All patients had OS-MRS scores recorded as clinical protocol in their files. The morbidity within 90 days in files was assessed according to the Clavien-Dindo classification. Results: Values remaining under the curve may be used to interpret OS-MRS points (p < 0.05). The cut-off value for OS-MRS points according to complications was calculated as 1. OS-MRS points above 1 may be associated with complications. The variable of OS-MRS points may be used as a parameter for complication cut-off. However, as the area under the curve (AUC) was close to 0.5, it is necessary to question the reliability. Conclusion: OS-MRS may be used for mortality in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy; however, it is unreliable to determine morbidity.","PeriodicalId":91556,"journal":{"name":"Journal of obesity and weight-loss medication","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84366893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Weight loss as modest as 5% of body weight significantly reduces the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The primary aim of this pilot study was to test the efficacy of a text messaging intervention in a primary care setting to motivate overweight patients to lose weight and reduce their waist circumference. Methods: A total of 128 adult primary care patients who were overweight and classified as abdominally obese via waist circumference measurement were randomized to enhanced care (EC, n = 62) or standard care (SC, n = 66). Patients assigned to both groups met with the physician, and the SC group received a standard clinic brochure on weight loss. In addition to the brochure, the EC group met with a research assistant to discuss the risks of abdominal obesity and resources to lose weight in addition to receiving 3 motivational text messages per week for 12 weeks and 2 phone calls to check in on their progress. At baseline, three, and six months, all patients had a survey administered and weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure were obtained. Results: In the EC group, 50% (n = 16) reported reading all of the text messages, 31% (n = 10) found the text messages helpful, and 84% (n = 26) reported using the diet and physical activity resources provided. The average weight loss at six months was 4.3 pounds in the SC group and 3 pounds in the EC group (p = 0.17). The average reduction in waist circumference at six months was 0.5 inches in the SC group and 1.2 inches in the EC group (p = 0.15). The most commonly reported diet change was reducing calories, with 28% (n = 17) and 36% (n = 18) reporting a low-calorie diet at three and six months, respectively. At six months, 26% (n = 13) reported engaging in cardiovascular exercise like jogging, aerobics, or swimming, while 24% (n = 12) reported engaging in some form of weightlifting as a change from baseline. Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrated the potential feasibility of a simple, texting-based intervention designed to motivate overweight individuals to lose weight and reduce their waist circumference in a primary care clinic. Both groups showed modest weight loss, slightly favoring the SC group, and waist circumference reductions favored the intervention group, although neither result was statistically significant. Future studies need creative ways to increase intervention exposure and harness the potential for mobile technology-based health coaching. While constraints of time and infrastructure may limit personalized counselling, mobile technology may serve as an excellent adjunct medium of communicating with patients about resources related to healthy eating and exercise. Novel methods for boosting the effectiveness of technology-based interventions are needed.","PeriodicalId":91556,"journal":{"name":"Journal of obesity and weight-loss medication","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87490775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
