This workshop was jointly organized by the UK's Digital Curation Centre (DCC), the US's Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (SILS). Nearly forty educators and researchers accepted invitations to attend, with representation from universities, research centers, and funding agencies from Canada, the US, the UK, and Germany.","PeriodicalId":91473,"journal":{"name":"D-Lib magazine : the magazine of the Digital Library Forum","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57679100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current systems have been long criticized due to shortcomings such as lack of coverage of publications and low accuracy of the citation data. Surprisingly, incomplete or incorrect data are used to make important decisions about researchers' careers. We argue that a new approach based on the collection of citation data at the time the papers are created can overcome current limitations, and we propose a new framework in which the research community is the owner of a Global Citation Registry characterized by high quality citation data handled automatically. We envision a registry that will be accessible by all the interested parties and will be the source from which the different impact models can be applied.","PeriodicalId":91473,"journal":{"name":"D-Lib magazine : the magazine of the Digital Library Forum","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57679088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They can use mind maps, for example, to manage their literature or to draft research papers. Dozens of tools exist to create mind maps, for instance, FreeMind, MindManager, and XMind. However, researchers need special features such as the possibility of accessing their bibliographic databases (e.g., BibTeX) directly from within the mind mapping software. Therefore, we developed SciPlore MindMapping, the first mind mapping tool solely focusing on researchers' needs. It offers all the features one would expect from a standard mind mapping software, plus three additional features for researchers.","PeriodicalId":91473,"journal":{"name":"D-Lib magazine : the magazine of the Digital Library Forum","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57680281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Like the two previous workshops in the series, it was dedicated to discussing several fundamental issues of Digital Libraries (DLs) related to modelling the key concepts that characterise the field. In particular, it focused on problems related to interoperability in large federated Digital Libraries. Experts participating in prominent DL projects were invited to present the main interoperability problems identified in their domain, the solutions applied, and the main open issues. The DELOS Reference Model for Digital Libraries was suggested as the conceptual tool to be used as a formal basis for understanding and discussing the full spectrum of interoperability issues.","PeriodicalId":91473,"journal":{"name":"D-Lib magazine : the magazine of the Digital Library Forum","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57679941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
