Individuals with frailty syndrome have increased adverse outcomes from COVID-19, and conversely, individuals following post-infection are at greater risk of developing frailty. Data from the 2020 CDC National Health Interview Survey for those 65 years and older assessed prevalence of functional, behavioral and affective limitations associated with frailty risk factors. Methods: Retrospective analysis of data collected by the CDC as part of their 2020 annual National Health Interview Survey using prospective sampling methods. Participants of study consisted of 1478 responses (5% of total responses collected). A nonparametric analysis was conducted using Kruskal Wallis (p < 0.05) and post hoc comparisons with Bonferroni’s adjustment was performed for three cohorts over the age of 65, those who: Tested negative for COVID-19; tested positive for COVID-19 with zero to mild symptoms; and tested positive for COVID-19 with moderate to severe symptoms. Results: Older adults with moderate to severe symptoms of COVID-19 demonstrated significant limitations associated with frailty risk, including feelings of tiredness, self-care limitations, and anxiety/depression compared to those negative for COVID-19. Having COVID-19 also resulted in a significantly greater need for walking assistance. Conclusions: Prevalence for limitations associated with frailty factors is greater in the community-dwelling older adult following COVID-19 infection, with symptom severity as a risk indicator. An effective follow-up screening performed at post-acute care discharge may help identify the occurrence and prevent the progression of frailty syndrome in the older adults compromised by COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":91314,"journal":{"name":"Journal of geriatric medicine and gerontology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48835036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This is a mixed methods study in which data were collected through interviews with managers from 10 LTCFs. The qualitative discussion was carried out through the PCC framework divided into 5 categories: leisure, accommodation, food, hygiene and comfort, and clinical care. The quantitative data collected were analyzed in a descriptive way, being discussed in the light of the literature. Results: Analyzed LTCFs are unaware of our present difficulties in the implementation of PCC, with a greater presence of the traditional biomedical model being recognized. Given the vulnerabilities that the LTCFs present, PCC is an important alternative for LTCFs to promote the quality of life and autonomy of residents. Deconstructing the vision of LTCFs as a last resort of care and investing in the quality of care is an urgent and essential imperative for dignified and comprehensive care. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for a change in culture and understanding of the LTCFs not only as a place to provide healthcare, but also as a residents’ home that fosters their autonomy, and feeling of belonging. Thus, it is essential to ensure that healthcare teams in LTCFs know about PCC and that further studies investigate the impact on the costs of PCC for institutionalized older adults.","PeriodicalId":91314,"journal":{"name":"Journal of geriatric medicine and gerontology","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77403722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Knowledge on locomotiveproblems and sarcopenia, and their interface with quality of life, in theoldest old in the literature is scarce.Objective: To evaluate the correlation between LoS and sarcopenia andtheir influence on quality of life in oldest old.Methods: A cross-sectional study of an observational, descriptive andanalytical epidemiological survey in independent older adults aged 80and over from São Paulo, Brazil and who participated in the third waveof the LOCOMOV Project, was carried out. Sociodemographic data,comorbidities, functioning in activities of daily living, physical functioning,quality of life, and presence of sarcopenia and LoS were assessed. Thestatistical analyses included the Test-for-Comparing-Two-Proportions,Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, the chi-Square test and Student´s t-test.Results: Thirty oldest old with a mean age of 89.1 years were evaluated.The prevalence of LoS was high (53.3%) and correlated significantly withchronic pain (p-value 0.024), worse performance on the SPPB and Gaitspeed (p-value <0.001). Sarcopenia was not correlated with LoS, but worsequality of life on the physical domain was significantly associated with LoS(p-value <0.001) regardless of the presence of sarcopenia.Conclusions: LoS was highly prevalent among the oldest old studied andnegatively impacted their quality of life, regardless of the presence ofsarcopenia. This is a 94-year-old female who suffered from COPD forover 30 years, occurred with an accelerated episode of cough, productivesputum and a dropping down to 86% in SatO₂ due to a cold weather. Adiagnosis of pulmonary encephalopathy (PE) was made on the basis of thesubsequent agitation and delirium, and the sedatives, such as quatiepineand haloperidol, had to be given for her mental excitation respectively, butshe still pulled out indwelling needle herself and refused to any infusiontherapy. As an alternative, a vaporized therapy integrated with tea herbdrinking had to be applied to relieving her agitation, being designedas the vaporization of the inhaled oxygenation by means of high-flowoxygenation device (HFOD), with an ampoule of ambroxol mixed into theinhaler and simultaneous drinking of TCM tea herb for reducing sputum,helping dissolve the mucoid bolts inside her terminal bronchioles whenbeing infected. We thought that a better efficacy would be achieved forhypercapnic encephalopathy due to AECOPD if we concentrate on a goodventilation of small airway through the vaporized therapy.","PeriodicalId":91314,"journal":{"name":"Journal of geriatric medicine and gerontology","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83323840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
