Programming error messages are one factor that is particularly problematic, with a documented history of evidence dating back over 50 years. Such messages, commonly called compiler error messages, present difficulties for programmers with diverse demographic backgrounds. It is generally agreed that these messages could be more effective for all users, making this an obvious and high-impact area to target for improving programming outcomes. This report documents the program and the outputs of Dagstuhl Seminar 22052, “The Human Factors Impact of Programming Error Messages”, which explores this problem. Despite the variety of existing resources to teach theories and practical skills in this domain, little is known about 1) how learning processes in the context of visualization unfold and 2) best practices for engaging and teaching data visualization to diverse audiences and in different contexts. This Dagstuhl Seminar invited practitioners, researchers, and teachers from the areas of visualization, design, education and cognitive psychology to explore these questions from multiple perspectives. Through a range of practical activities, talks, and discussions, we have begun characterizing and classifying teaching methodologies. We have redacted a pedagogical manifesto, and started formalizing the concept of improvisation with visualization in the context of teaching and learning. We have also interrogated creativity as an important aspect of visualization teaching and learning and explored links between data physicalization and visualization teaching activities. Across these different themes, we have begun to map out the challenges of visualization teaching and learning and the opportunities for research and practice in this area. Within this movement is a push for increasing research transparency. Although researchers in the areas of Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and Visualization (VIS) face these challenges, they have methodological expertise to study, design, and evaluate innovations that could help improve research transparency. This Dagstuhl Seminar gathers HCI and VIS researchers and those from adjacent fields such as statistics and psychology to discuss challenges in promoting and adopting research transparency, create prototypes of potential solutions, and receive feedback from policy influencers in the research community.
