In the present study, we examined the anti-angiogenic and anti-tumorigenic potential of pomegranate juice on benzo(a)pyrene-induced mice lung carcinoma by analyzing the SOD and CAT anti-oxidants, MDA for oxidative stress and the marker of angiogenesis (CD34). Oral administration of pomegranate (10% w/v) to Swiss albino mice suppressed the development of lung carcinoma by disappointment MDA, histopathological lesions and the Micro-Vessels Density (MVD). The significant correlation (p<0.05) was present in an improvements the SOD and CAT anti-oxidants. The results obtained from the present study show that pomegranate inhibits the development of mice lung carcinogenesis through its ability to induce apoptosis and disappointment the formation of new vessels (angiogenesis). Our present findings were that the protective benefits of pomegranate juice may be due in part to its potent anti-oxidant properties and ability to reduce oxidative stress, histopathological injuries by suppressing the formation of reactive oxygen species and protecting the anti-oxidant mechanism and inhibition of MVD. So, this study suggested that the pomegranate is anti-angiogenic effectiveness in the benzo(a)pyrene induced lung carcinoma in mice.","PeriodicalId":90856,"journal":{"name":"International journal of cancer research","volume":"16 1","pages":"164-174"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82636068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also prevalent in our country, Iran and according to statistics, it is the most common cancer in men. Since, the relationship between expression of CD34 cell surface markers and many cancers has been approved in the present study, the marker expression association with GC is studied. In this study, a total of 47 paraffin blocks of patients with GC referring to Imam Khomeini hospital in Ahvaz, during 2003-2013 were used. The mean age of 47 patients, including, 35 men (74.5%) and 12 women, was 60±16.05 years old ranging from 24-84. The mean tumor size was 34.5 ranging from 2-12 cm. More than 71% of tumors were intestinal type and the depth of more than 74% of them was in T3 phase. Incidence of marker was positive in only 8 patients (17%) and in rest 39 was negative. The CD34 expression was significantly correlated only with the tumor type (p = 0.00), degree of malignancy (p = 0.00) and neural invasion (p = 0.01). In this study, a positive correlation was observed between the marker expression and three factors of tumor type, degree of differentiation and neural invasion. It was also concluded that due to the negative CD34 expression in 83% of samples, the absence of positive CD34 cells in tumor tissue can be considered as a marker in GC, although it is recommended to do further research with more samples in this context.","PeriodicalId":90856,"journal":{"name":"International journal of cancer research","volume":"47 1","pages":"136-142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88955747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of FNA in the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors nature compared with the histopathological results after mass excision. This is a cross-sectional study, where since April 2009 to March 2012, all patients complaining about salivary gland tumors referred to the ear, nose and throat ward of Ahvaz Imam Khomeini hospital and undergone FNA and biopsy have been studied. Then, the results of FNA were compared with pathology results after mass excision, as well as the diagnostic accuracy of FNA was calculated. In this study, 160 patients were studied including 88 females (55%) and 72 males (45%). Most patients were in the age group of 31-40 years and lowest in patients aged over 80 years. The mean age of patients was 41.7±18.9 with a minimum 3 years and the maximum was 85 years old. The FNA sensitivity in salivary gland tumor to pathological findings after mass excision was calculated 92.3% and its characteristics 99%. The positive predictive value was 96% and negative predicted value 97.9%. As shown in this study, FNA sensitivity has a high specificity and diagnostic value in the detection of the salivary gland lesions. Given that it is an inexpensive, safe and reliable method, it is recommended to be used more widely.","PeriodicalId":90856,"journal":{"name":"International journal of cancer research","volume":"47 1","pages":"143-149"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75745457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CST was obtained by soxhlet extraction with chloroform. Animals (Male Sprague Dawley rats) were divided into three groups: Group I-normal control, group II-CST (200 mg kgG1 b.wt.), group III-CST (800 mg kgG1 b.wt.). The CST was given by oral gavage once daily for 15 days. At the end of the experimental period all the rats were sacrificed and the livers, lungs and kidneys were taken for estimating the phase I and II drug metabolizing and antioxidant enzyme activities. The gain in body weight and the levels of GSH and lipid peroxides in these tissues were also determined. The results showed that the administration of CST could modulate the phase I and phase II enzymes that are critical for cancer protection. Administration of CST at 200 and 800 mg kgG1 b.wt. to animals did not cause any apparent clinical signs as survivability or visible changes caused by toxicity in the liver, lungs and kidney. Administration of CST at a dose of (800 mg kgG1 b.wt.) was found to be ineffective in elevating the phase I enzymes suggesting that CST could possibly prevent the biotransformation of carcinogens. These results clearly indicate that CST with its biologically active components could be used as a chemo preventive agent in treating various cancers.","PeriodicalId":90856,"journal":{"name":"International journal of cancer research","volume":"1 1","pages":"109-118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78673498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The potential of M. cordata as an anti-cancer agent has not been explored thus far. This study aims to assess M. cordata as a possible anti-cancer agent, specifically against MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Ethanol extract-vacuum liquid chromatography fractions inhibited proliferation of the MCF-7 cells via different mechanisms. Fraction 6 induces non-specific cytotoxicity via apoptosis and oxidative pathways demonstrated by the TUNEL and DPPH assays. Fractions 7, 10 and 11 exhibit selective cytotoxicity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells but does so through mechanisms other than apoptosis and oxidation. The results suggest that novel mechanisms of action may be at work, imparting cancer-specific cytotoxicity properties of these fractions. Phytochemical screening suggests terpenes and saponins as the possible anti-cancer agent in M. cordata.","PeriodicalId":90856,"journal":{"name":"International journal of cancer research","volume":"16 1","pages":"80-92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75124837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, fifty women childbearing ages between 20-40 years referred to the gynecological and midwifery section of the hospital, who had the asymptomatic endometrial polyps smaller than 1.5 cm. They were randomly divided into two groups \"control\" and \"case\" individually 25 members. The group case, were treated for three months with oral contraceptive pills. Women were examined in sonography before and after taking pills in order to measure the polyp size. Almost 24% of the group case responded to treatment, 32% size reduction and 44% remained with no change in size. While, in the control group there was 28% size reduction, 37% neutral and 35% encountered increase in size was unchanged. The average size of endometrial polyps in the group control did not take statistical significance difference before and later than treatment (9.5 vs. 8.6 mm, p = 0.297). However, the size of the polyp in the group case had significant statistical difference before and after the treatment (9.5 vs. 6.3 mm, p<0.05). Use of oral contraceptive pills in the treatment of endometrial polyps is low cost and non-invasive compared with such surgical procedures as curettage and hysteroscopy. Therefore, in this regard, further studies are recommended.","PeriodicalId":90856,"journal":{"name":"International journal of cancer research","volume":"19 1","pages":"104-108"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81338210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
