SDC occurs when incorrect data is provided to the user, e.g., written to the memory or I/O system, and no error is triggered. Such events may have catastrophic effects, in the case of life critical applications, and represent a significant cost penalty for businesses. The purpose of this panel is to provide real examples of silent corruption, and discuss solutions for avoiding it. The presentations address SDC generated at the semiconductor device level, as well as the virtualization software level. Techniques for reducing SDC, from the circuit to system level, will be covered. Results of an extensive SDC study, carried out at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) on high-performance computing (HPC) platforms are also given.","PeriodicalId":90852,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks workshops : [proceedings]. The purpose of this workshop is to promote communication among groups with similar challenges in assurance cases - groups that often are unaware of what is being done in other similar communities. We hope that the workshop will start a process of continuing discussion across disciplines on the central challenges and opportunities for assurance cases, and initiate the development of a standard set of best practices and guidelines for developing and assessing assurance cases. In addition to specific summary outputs from the workshop, we will use the workshop as an opportunity to gauge interest and commitment in forming an IEEE sponsored planning group to address possible standards activities for assurance cases. At a minimum we would like to make this the first in a series of annual workshops on assurance cases, and begin to form a cross-discipline community of interest. We have the structured the workshop in three sessions. The first session will focus on current best practices, experiences, and recurring challenges. The second session will focus on promising research (tools, notations, techniques, etc.) and new opportunities for developing, reviewing, and maintaining assurance cases. The final session will include a summary and review of key points from the first two sessions, moderated discussion on important consensus and disagreements, and identification of next steps. Position papers, presentations, and follow up material after the workshop will be posted on the workshop web site only.","PeriodicalId":90852,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks workshops : [proceedings]. Widespread proliferation of wireless RF technology has brought the possibility of infrastructureless networking to the forefront. Infrastructureless networks are often referred to as wireless ad hoc networks and they include sensor networks as an important subclass. Dependability issues such as security, reliability, availability, and quality of service are complicated by the wireless and infrastructureless environment. Reliability and availability solutions must account for the varying characteristics of a wireless channel, which is subject to interference, fading, and multipath effects, among other problems. The presence of mobile nodes in many of these settings complicates even further the dependability issues. To date, no conference or workshop has specifically addressed dependability-related issues for ad hoc and sensor networks. One of the goals of this workshop is to bring together researchers to focus exclusively on this important topic, to outline its specific and unique research challenges, and to identify some of the most promising candidate solution methods and techniques to address those challenges. A second, and equally important, goal is to promote synergy between the networking and dependability communities on this topic of mutual concern. DIWANS includes invited talks from several prominent researchers in the field, and peer-reviewed papers on a variety of relevant topics. Most important, however, are the interactions among a diverse set of researchers, working at all network layers and interested in a wide range of problems, from the most fundamental to the most applied.","PeriodicalId":90852,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks workshops : [proceedings]. The goal of this workshop is to bring together experts from different disciplines and application domains to exchange ideas, make concrete progress across disciplinary barriers, and establish contacts and possible collaborations. At the same time, it is meant to be of value to all DSN participants, providing some introduction to the related disciplines that have value for current dependability problems, examples of what they can deliver, a challenge to consider problems that our individual specialisms may make us neglect, to our peril, and a forum for participants to express needs for interdisciplinary work and experience about its uses and problems. The selected contributions cover overlaps between the 'standard' concerns of dependable systems and networks and those of psychology, sociology and other 'human' sciences, the law, or disciplines that although closely related to DSN are usually under-represented, like human-computer interaction and human reliability. The format of the workshop will emphasize extensive discussion and be geared to achieve effective interchange of ideas among people from different backgrounds.","PeriodicalId":90852,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks workshops : [proceedings]. In this paper we present our experience in validating result checkers using formal methods. We have conducted several case studies in validating result checkers from the commercial LEDA system for combinatorial and geometric computing.
