Dr. Guilfoose describes the story that began when he saw a large sea turtle as he was snorkeling in the bay. Puerto Rico has two major islands, Culebra, which is known for wealth-- very touristy. And then there’s Vieques, which I think was originally a bombing strip for American military. But it turns out it has an incredibly redeemed component from a tourist perspective of bioluminescent bays. So, I just got there, checked into the hotel, and wanted to go snorkeling. Did not bring any of my own stuff. And so, I went out and just rented some cheapy snorkel. Do not know if this is pertinent, but it could be. I hyper- hydrated right before going snorkeling. So, I drank like five big glasses of water. It might have something to do with the expansion of positive volume right before I went into the water.","PeriodicalId":90756,"journal":{"name":"Tropical medicine & surgery","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70012745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Background: The pattern of presentation of breast cancer among Nigerian women is that of prolonged delay, symptomatic breast cancer, advanced breast cancer and poor long-term survival. Seventy percent of cases of breast cancer present in advanced stage. Materials and Methods: The reasons for delayed hospital presentation among patients with breast cancer was assessed using a hospital-based longitudinal study. Data were obtained using a structured proforma. Retrieved data were entered into Microsoft Excel and exported to United States CDC Epi- Info version 7 for statistical analysis. Results: Out of 61 patients counselled for mastectomy, 11 (18%) declined while 50 (82%) accepted. 35 patients with late breast cancer accepted mastectomy while 7patients in the same category did not. Among patients who accepted mastectomy, 15 (30%) were early while 35 (70%) were late breast cancer. Conclusion: The relatively high acceptance of mastectomy seen in this study is tied to patients presenting in late stage of breast cancer. More work is required to improve acceptance of the procedure at early stages of the disease.","PeriodicalId":90756,"journal":{"name":"Tropical medicine & surgery","volume":"37 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70013196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Continuous exposure of the skin to oxidative stresses leads to the formation of the reactive oxygen species with in body, skin and cell of the host organism. The accumulation of these reactive species can result in the damage to cellular DNA and cell membrane lipids and proteins. Damage to these organelles produces free radicals that start a vicious cycle that can lead to increase cell damage and senescence. To overcome this problem, our skin contains the cutaneous antioxidants, but it soon gets depleted on exposure to UV rays and also because of environmental stresses. The overload of these oxidative stresses will lead to chronic and degenerative diseases like cancer, autoimmune disorder, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. These antioxidants have to be replenished to overcome these oxidative stresses. Therefore the use of natural antioxidants is a promising strategy to with respect to oxidation of cells.","PeriodicalId":90756,"journal":{"name":"Tropical medicine & surgery","volume":"7 1","pages":"1-2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70278992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method and Results: Pretested questionnaire was used to collect data. 418 ladies aged (18-45 years) were included in the study, 340 had unilateral or bilateral breast pain for a period of not less than two months, either localized (54%) or generalized. 19.7% had the pain for more than 10 times per year. (77%) of those ladies were used to drink coffee once daily, (13%) of them were using contraceptive pills, and 49 patients were smokers and all of them had breast pain. (60.8%) were obese with significant P value (0.003). Conclusion: Mastalgia is common among the Saudi population. Providing a good healthcare and preventing the risk factors will reduce the number of ladies visiting the outpatient department (OPD). The management should start with lifestyle changes, education and reassurance.","PeriodicalId":90756,"journal":{"name":"Tropical medicine & surgery","volume":"2017 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46730315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is usually complicated by various organ dysfunctions, and is diagnosed by serology. We are reporting a case of 34 years old man resident of West Bengal presented to us with complaints of fever for 7 days with features of pneumonitis and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). He received doxycyline after positive serology of IgM Scrub typhus, and responded very well. In tropical region any short duration fever with pneumonia, AKI with leukocytosis scrub typhus should be kept in differential as it is a fairly treatable and significantly under diagnosed condition.","PeriodicalId":90756,"journal":{"name":"Tropical medicine & surgery","volume":"2017 1","pages":"1-2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70278924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Victims who of sexual assault may experience comorbid issues while trying to recover from this trauma, such as homelessness. Whether the victim is trying to escape an abusive home situation or is being sexually molested while serving in the armed forces, homelessness has been observed as a trend among those impacted. The purpose of this systematic literature review (SLR) was to provide an extensive summary of the impact that sexual assault has on an individual’s life and to also provide information regarding the number of articles pertaining to sexual assault and homelessness. A systematic approach was used to analyze the available literature; using keywords to help identify important articles that were pertinent to the topic. The outcome of the literature review revealed a total of 25 relevant articles relating to the key words. This literature indicated that further education is imperative for caregivers or social workers to better understand the symptoms associated with adolescent homelessness and runaway-ism, as most homeless youth will also meet the criteria for psychiatric disorders.","PeriodicalId":90756,"journal":{"name":"Tropical medicine & surgery","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2329-9088.1000212","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70278864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
