Explicit solutions for stiffness and mass matrices and the load vector of a two-node plate finite element are derived by using a weighted residual formulation. The accuracy of the present finite-element model is verified by comparing with a set of analytical solutions for nanoplates. Simply supported plates show more influence of the surface energy effect compared with clamped plates. The first natural frequency is also affected, but higher natural frequencies as well as all mode shapes show minor influence of surface energy effects. The surface residual stress is found to be the key parameter that influences the deflections and natural frequencies. The current solutions clearly show the size-dependent response of nanoplates.","PeriodicalId":90606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nanomechanics & micromechanics","volume":"3 1","pages":"59-66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1061/(ASCE)NM.2153-5477.0000056","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58475651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The attractive properties of graphene have led to intensive research on graphene-polymer nanocomposites. However, very little work has been reported on using graphene in manufacturing multifunctional cement-based nanocomposites. This paper attempts to bridge recent findings of science-based discovery and nanoscience to the ancient and challenging technology of cement. Utilizing a holistic approach (i.e., integrating modeling, synthesis, and analysis of cement) is a challenge that cannot be fully addressed in one paper or one research experiment. Therefore, this paper presents a general framework for using a system approach to study cement-based materials. The paper highlights primary findings in manufacturing and characterizing graphene-cement nanocomposites (GCNCs). First, upon introducing the fineness as the number of grains of either phase across the FGM, the two-phase FGM is characterized using fractals, and an interfacial fractal dimension is estimated for varying degrees of fineness. A variation in local fractal dimension is considered across or along the FGM domain, and it is characterized by Fourier series and Beta function fits. Assuming the FGM is made of locally isotropic Titanium (Ti) and Titanium Monoboride (TiB), pure shear tests are simulated using ABAQUS for fineness levels of 50, 100, and 200 under the uniform kinematic boundary condition (UKBC) and the uniform static boundary condition (USBC). The material response observed under these BCs shows high sensitivity of these systems to loading conditions. Furthermore, plastic evolution of Ti grains, assuming isotropic plastic hardening, displays a fractal, p...","PeriodicalId":90606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nanomechanics & micromechanics","volume":"3 1","pages":"04013001-04013001"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1061/(ASCE)NM.2153-5477.0000058","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58475739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, precipitates are modeled as particles whose stress fields interact with dislocations. The stress field resulting from the elastic mismatch between the particles and the matrix is accounted for by using the EIM, whereas the MM method is employed to develop rules for the DD method for short range interactions between a single dislocation and an inclusion. The DD method is used to predict the strength of the composite structure resulting from the interaction between ensembles of dislocations and particles. As an application to this method, the mechanical behavior of advanced high strength steel is investigated and the results are compared to the experimental data published in previous studies. Load-displacement data are then analyzed using a common method to determine elastic modulus and hardness of materials. The slope of the unloading curve is positive and typically follows the slope of the loading curve for hard samples such as aluminum and silicon. The analysis method is not applicable if the unloading curve follows a negative slope, which is the case for soft viscous materials, such as asphalt binders and polymers. However, past studies have not attempted to examine the effects of dwell time and loading rate on viscous materials, such as asphalt binders, which are performed in this study. It is shown in this paper that an increase in dwell time shows a decrease in the bowing out or nose effect of the unloading portion of the load-displacement curve. At very low loading rates, asphalt binder shows a high viscous effect, which creates a large negative slope of the unloading curve.","PeriodicalId":90606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nanomechanics & micromechanics","volume":"3 1","pages":"17-23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1061/(ASCE)NM.2153-5477.0000054","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58475545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a three-phase material composed of aggregates, asphalt binder, and air voids, asphalt mixture is considered as a viscoelastic material at a low stress level. The behavior of the mixture depends largely on the interaction among different components. A contact model between two aggregates is very important for understanding the deformation mechanism of the mixture. In this study, a contact model between two aggregates was reviewed in details. A closed-form time-dependent relationship between the contact forces and the relative particle/binder movements was derived. An experimental test was designed to evaluate the model which contains two elastic particles bonded by a thin layer of asphalt binder. The displacement and resistant force of the aggregate-binder system under uniaxial compression loading were documented using a cabinet X-ray tomography system. To develop the fundamental equations, the finite strip method, along with third-order shear deformation theory, is employed, and the total potential energy is minimized, which leads to an eigenvalue problem. The elastic foundation is modeled by classical and two-parameter simulations. For deriving the effective modulus of composite plates reinforced with carbon nanotubes, a method is used in which each straight carbon nanotube is modeled as a fiber with transversely isotropic elastic properties. The MWCNTs were surface treated by long-chain organic groups and decorated by ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. According to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, the grafting rate of organic groups and the decoration rate of ferroferric oxide were 5.56 and 1.13%, respectively. From the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, regular nanochannel structures and compact combination could be observed in the epoxy matrix. Pseudostatic and dynamic loading tests were performed. The results indicated that the MWCNT-based damping structure could achieve an infiltration pressure (yielding stress) up to 30 MPa, leading to a large energy dissipation capacity.","PeriodicalId":90606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nanomechanics & micromechanics","volume":"3 1","pages":"43-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1061/(ASCE)NM.2153-5477.0000059","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58475926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of particular interest are nested carbon nanotubes with telescopic movements. Recent work on this type of oscillator has led to new results and new insights into such oscillatory systems. That work has also led to the introduction of a special initial velocity at which the oscillatory frequency is unique and independent of the core length. This finding stimulates the idea of developing a nondimensional formulism for the oscillatory frequency of such systems, which is the prime objective of the work undertaken herein. The results generated are in nondimensional form and cover a wide range of system parameters. Utilizing the new formulas derived, different aspects of the oscillatory frequency are studied and discussed. The generality of the formulation presented in this paper provides a better perception of such systems and helps in designing the system parameters.","PeriodicalId":90606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nanomechanics & micromechanics","volume":"3 1","pages":"9-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1061/(ASCE)NM.2153-5477.0000053","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58475961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, various atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques (i.e., tapping mode imaging, force spectroscopy, and nanoindentation) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments were conducted on asphalt binders modified with different contents of a nanoclay material. The AFM images and XRD results indicated that the nanoclay had an exfoliated structure within the nanocomposite. In addition, the AFM images showed better interaction between the nanoclay layers and the distinct asphalt domains containing the so-called “beelike” structures as compared to the flat asphalt matrix. The results of the force spectroscopy experiments indicated that the inclusion of the nanoclay material significantly enhanced the adhesive forces of asphalt materials, while it had a slightly adverse effect on the cohesive forces.
