Modelling the dynamic response of AOT-involving drill string systems is of high importance for validating functional tests of oscillation tools and predicting their performance under downhole conditions. This study presents a mathematical model used for predicting the dynamic response of axial oscillationsupported drill string (AOSD) systems under the surface and downhole conditions. The model is useful to perform placement analysis of axial oscillation tools within the bottom hole assembly. Nonlinear equations of motion and introduction of displacement excitation in the model development make it different from existing models. The spring rate of the axial oscillation tool is a critical input in the determination of displacement excitation. The resulting nonlinear equations of motion are linearized, and solutions are obtained using the Eigenfunction Superposition method. The model is validated using published measurements obtained from experiments conducted using fieldscale axial oscillation tools. Results show reasonable agreement between predictions and measurements at different axial displacements, vibration frequencies, and system pressure drops. The usability of the mathematical model was validated with published experimental data with an observed average deviation of approximately 14.5%. Unlike existing models, the new model accounts for the combined effect of excitation pressure drop and vibration frequency on axial displacement.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69996680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present numerical study, we apply spanwise-dependent fluidic actuation, both steady and time-periodic, on the flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 2000. The actuation takes the form of in-phase blowing and suction from slits located at ±90o (top and bottom) with respect to the upstream stagnation point. Optimal forcing amplitude and wavelength are obtained by sweeping across the parametric space. A promising reduction in drag force, combined with the suppression of lift fluctuations, is obtained for spanwise-dependent steady actuation with appropriate actuation wavelength. Several actuation frequencies are investigated for time-dependent actuation. Lift fluctuations and drag force are found to increase significantly under actuation at frequencies close to the shear layer instability, thus indicating a potential interest for energy harvesting applications at these low Reynolds numbers.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70873930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the hybrid rocketry applications of swirl atomizers most often involve such fluids, it is vital to determine whether a commonly used analytical expression remains valid in those circumstances. A computation fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed, first using water as a working fluid to determine a baseline of accuracy that could be expected, then using liquid oxygen as a working fluid to determine the accuracy of the expression to a cryogenic case. In addition, experimental data from several papers using both room temperature and cryogenic fluids were examined; both to expand the data from which to draw a baseline and to expand the data from which to analyze the performance of cryogenic working fluids.\u0000The CFD simulation was run at a pressure of 1 kPa with a geometry similar to those commonly used in hybrid rocket applications. While the results diverged significantly from those of the analytical expressions, the water and liquid oxygen cases showed similar divergence, indicating a similar level of accuracy in prediction. As a secondary result, the low suitability of these expressions for analysis of atomizers significantly larger than those used in the initial development of the relation and at lower pressure was shown. The experimental data provided a baseline of ??20% accuracy of the expressions with regard to the empirical results for the room temperature fluids. Using that baseline, it was shown that the analysis of the case with a cryogenic fluid was accurate to within a similar tolerance.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70873579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CubeSat design process is comprised of choice of its trajectory, determination of components and main parameters of its systems, development of external and internal layouts, determination of the number of satellite-born antennas and their main characteristics. The potential of CubeSat has prompted the scientific community to rethink the existing spacecraft technologies and think about how to make them suitable for CubeSats. In terms of specialization of engineering works during Smallsat development, was formulated concept of the design process and recognized physical relationships to find some optimal design solution about compatibility of basic parameters and characteristics. The purpose of Smallsat rational design is to create a project of a vehicle for which the value of the selected criterion is close to the maximum or minimum value. As a result, the design algorithm version was making. The described method of rational design, of course, does not deny the process of intuitive creative thinking. This process reveals itself in assumptions and development of reference versions, as well as in ballistic design.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44706601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various nacelle lidar systems have been used for the measurements of wind inflow to realize high-performance wind turbines. The measurement of a two-beam nacelle lidar used as a simple measurement system has been compared with those of a nacelle anemometer and a met-mast. The 10-min-averaged data obtained from the two-beam nacelle lidar have good measurement accuracy, but the lidar is unable to measure wind shear. Monitoring of wind in-flow for multimegawatt wind turbines requires an advanced lidar system that can measure wind shear. Further, there is a lack of observation reports on measurements using the two-beam nacelle lidar under strong turbulence conditions. In this study, the authors evaluated the measurement characteristics of a nine-beam nacelle lidar installed on a 300-kW wind turbine. This nacelle lidar could measure radial wind speeds in nine directions; further, horizontal wind speeds were measured using a three-beam system. The use of three beams led to a considerably higher availability of the lidar in comparison to the availability when using two beams. This lidar also could measure wind speed uniformity in a transverse direction by using three beams. To discriminate the lidar measurement data in terms of their quality, some filtering indexes for these data were proposed. Continuous and reliable monitoring of wind shear could be achieved by filtering the measured data.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2168-9873.1000309","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43967896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biodiesel was distinguished as a potential option to petrodiesel fuel since it has fuel properties as diesel. Utilization of consumable oils in biodiesel will creates foundations at raise of costs, yet couple of edible oils, for example rice bran oil have prohibitive heating conditions when contrasted with non-edible oil are accessible in a few nations such as soybean oil in USA. Inside this job, the performance examination of single chamber, 4-stroke, and water-cooled diesel engine was done utilizing rice bran oil methyl ester as biodiesel contrasting option to diesel fuel. Trial tests have been directed with scope of engine loads utilizing rice bran oil methyl ester (RBOME) and its diesel mixes with biodiesel in the proportion of B10, B20, B30 and B0 i.e., petrodiesel 100% by volume. In this exploration work, brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) and exhaust gas temperature (EGT) are considered as engine execution attributes. The examination revealed that B20 mix of biodiesel has similar brake thermal efficiency as diesel. B20 has most minimal and has most astounding BSFC, BSEC after all the biodiesel mixes. B20R has shown practically identical execution as diesel and it can be considered as other option to diesel fuel.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41844266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These operations include the routine start-up, load change and shut downs to cover their operation envelope. The frequency of the dynamic operation depends on the size of the engines and the field of application. Engines for commuter aircrafts and particularly helicopter engines operate more often in an off-design mode compared to large commercial aircraft engines and power generation gas turbines. During these routine operations, the compressor mass flow, the pressure ratio, the combustion chamber fuel and air mass flow as well as turbine mass flow change. These changes affect the engine aerodynamic performance and its efficiency. To avoid the inception of rotating stall and surge, high performance gas turbines are equipped with mechanisms that adjust the stator stagger angles thus aligning the stator exit flow angle to the rotor inlet angle, which reduces an excessive incidence. The reduction of incidence angle not only preserves the stable operation of the compressor, but it also prevents the compressor efficiency from deterioration. The existence of an inherent positive pressure gradient may cause the boundary layer separation on compressor blades leading to the rotating stall and surge. Such condition, however, does not exist in a turbine, and therefore, there has been no compelling reason to apply the blade adjusting method to the turbine component. For the first time, the impact of turbine blade stagger angle adjustment on the gas turbine efficiency during the operation is shown in this paper. Given a statistically distributed load condition, the extensive dynamic simulation reported in this paper shows how the efficiency can be positively affected through proper blade adjustment. For the time dependent operation, the code GETRAN developed by the author was enhanced to include the turbine blade adjustment as a function of time. To conduct the dynamic simulation with turbine stator stagger angle adjustment during a dynamic operation, the full geometry of the Brown Boveri GT-9 gas turbine was utilized. Starting from the reference stagger angle, it is varied within an incidence range of ± 3 degree. Detailed simulation results show the substantial efficiency improvement through stator stagger blade adjustment.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2168-9873.1000302","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47122673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly, the contact dynamics simulation is implemented in Abaqus. In this study, the stress and strain contours of the high strength ring chain under the chain speeds of 1.85 m/min, 5.6 m/min, and 7.8 m/min and under the transportation loads of 2t, 3t, and 3.5t are obtained, plus their stress histories. Simulation results show that the corresponding steady stresses under distinct chain speeds are 748.2 MPa, 754.5 MPa, and 755.6 MPa, determining the optimal chain speed of 5.6m min-1. After reaching the steady state, the maximum stresses under the loads of 2t, 3t, and 3.5t are 774.8 MPa, 758.1 MPa, and 747 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the experimental results illustrate that the energy consumption caused by the friction among high strength ring chains under no-load operation occupies 23.8% of the resistance consumption. With the rise in loads, the total resistance consumption grows linearly. As a consequence, the research on the dynamic characteristics of the high strength ring chain is valuable for improving the working efficiency of the electromotor.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44343731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
