While a focused and precise method, citation chasing may be incomplete and unstable. Different choices of paths can lead to different sets of literature and generate inconsistent search results. Revealing the linkages among references would guide citation chasing as well as improve and stabilize the results since it enables researchers to develop search strategies.\u0000 In this paper we use network analysis to examine the connections among papers cited as references, identifying and investigating papers with high authority and hub values. We construct local citation networks, introducing the firework visualization model to support citation chasing. We further introduce an interactive browser, designed to provide direct manipulation of references and aggregated summaries of retrieved results. The proposed firework model allows users to intuitively browse a local citation network and find relevant documents efficiently.
IHI ... : proceedings of the ... Clinical text found in clinical narratives and patient case reports usually reflects a sublanguage with medicine specific terminology. It is also frequently characterized by temporal expressions co-occurring with medical events.\u0000 In this paper, we outline a method for quantifying the similarity between medical events found in the New England Journal of Medicine patient case reports. We believe this method will be valuable in classifying medical events as coreferential. We approach this problem by determining the overlap between pairs of medical events in terms of 1) the relation between medical events in the UMLS graph structure and 2) the temporal relation between the medical events. We demonstrate our ideas on a corpus of New England Journal of Medicine case reports annotated with coreference information. Preliminary results indicate a precision of 78.5% and recall of 95.5% in identifying pairs of coreferential medical events.
IHI ... : proceedings of the ... The HISS software toolkit is supporting a larger methodology to implement research into practice through a series of quality improvement projects and managing the design, introduction, spread and sustainability of those improvements. It allows the project teams to design the desired process model, define quantitative improvement measures, and automatically generate a web application for the team members to enter measurement data at regular (typically weekly) intervals, and monitor their progress in real-time. The demo will showcase some common functions of the system on the example of a real-life improvement project.
IHI ... : proceedings of the ... We are working towards applying deep Natural Language Processing tools towards understanding such narratives. This requires both the extraction and classification of the relevant events, and the placing of those events in time, or at least in relation to one another. Although several corpora of news data exist that have been annotated using the TimeML schema, similar corpora of clinical reports are not readily available.\u0000 In this paper we report on the design of a small corpus and the annotation schema we developed, based on data from the fourth i2b2/VA challenge. These data include, among others, annotations for medical problems, tests, and treatments in clinical reports from several healthcare institutions. We have selected a subset of clinical reports and added annotations similar to those used in the TempEval tasks for the annotation of events, time expressions and temporal relations for the news domain. Our approach is based on a better understanding of clinical context through ontologies, and bringing them to bear in deciding the right rules for a certain activity. We also describe an approach for integrating and instantiating context specific subprocess fragment into a clinical pathway on the fly based on the needs of a specific case. To illustrate the feasibility of our approach, we present a system architecture and prototype implementation, along with a case study for handling patients with heart disease. The role of semantic web technologies in integrating clinical pathways into CDSS is highlighted.
IHI ... : proceedings of the ... The huge amount of irrelevant data available in microblogs requires sophisticated filtering methods in order to identify only relevant postings. Microblogs are characteristically sparse and noisy. This requires additional considerations for selection of features for automatic classification for relevance with respect to medical intelligence gathering. In this paper, we will analyze which features are well suited. The objective of this work is three-fold: 1) Specifying annotation guidelines for creating a dataset for microblog classification, 2) Studying the characteristics of tweets for deciding on a well suited feature set, and 3) making use of that feature set in an automatic classification system for relevance filtering of microblogs. The quality of the classifier is assessed in experiments with various feature sets. The evaluation shows that despite the challenging characteristics of mircoblogs, good accuracy values of up to 89% can be achieved by the classifier. One main outcome of this work is a data set of annotated twitter data which can be used as a "gold standard" benchmark for further research in this domain.
IHI ... : proceedings of the ... While this presents a very powerful platform for federated querying and heterogeneous data integration, its true potential can only be realized when combining such information with "real patient" data from electronic health records. In this paper, we report our early experiences in applying Linked Data principles and technologies for representing patient data from electronic health records (EHRs) at Mayo Clinic in RDF. Previous human activity recognition techniques use a "whole-motion" model in which continuous sensor streams are divided into windows with a fixed time duration whose length is chosen such that all the relevant information in each activity signal can be extracted from each window. In this paper, we present a statistical motion primitive-based framework for human activity representation and recognition. Our framework is based on Bag-of-Features (BoF), which builds activity models using histograms of primitive symbols. We experimentally validate the effectiveness the BoF-based framework for recognizing nine activity classes and evaluate six factors which impact the performance of the framework. The factors include window size, choices of features, methods to construct motion primitives, motion vocabulary size, weighting schemes of motion primitive assignments, and learning machine kernel functions. Finally, we demonstrate that our statistical BoF-based framework can achieve much better performance compared to a non-statistical string-matching-based approach.
IHI ... : proceedings of the ...
