For this purpose, we conducted two laboratory studies to explore how the credibility cues in message contents, website features, and user reviews could differentially impact younger and older adults' credibility judgments. Results from the first experiment showed that older adults, compared to younger ones, were less sensitive to the credibility cues in message contents, as well as those in the website features. Results from the second experiment showed that user reviews that were consistent with the credibility cues in message contents could reinforce older adults' credibility judgments. Older adults, compared to younger adults, seemed to be less swayed by user reviews that were inconsistent with the message contents. These results provided implications for designing health information websites that better support older adults' credibility judgments.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... However, spreading information through social networks can be sensitive and problematic when the content relates to stigmatized illnesses. This paper proposes a novel strategy, Veiled Viral Marketing, which uses social networking sites to anonymously disseminate information about stigmatized illnesses to social networking friends. We describe the successes and failures of this approach based on an empirical study of a prototype Facebook App called FactCheck: HPV which was downloaded by over 1,022 users. We find interest in sending \"veiled\" invitations, though not as much interest as sending invitations from a known friend (1:2 ratio). However, we find that users are 5 times more likely to download the app if invited from a \"veiled\" friend compared to a known friend. We conclude with design suggestions related to Veiled Viral Marketing and dissemination of information on stigmatized illnesses more generally.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... How do nutrition and healthcare sites fare in fostering trust in consumers? Through reviews of trust and design literatures, we created a checklist incorporating a 5-dimension framework of design factors (graphic, structure, content, social, system) affecting trust cues. Next, we conducted a usability inspection on implementation of trust cues on 86 (30 healthcare, 31 nutrition and 25 healthcare & nutrition) websites. Our findings suggest that Graphics-Driven trust cues were implemented most to foster consumers' trust, with the Socially-Driven trust cues being the least implemented. This is on-going work. The paper concluded with implementations for improvement in the design of trust cues to foster initial consumers' trust in nutrition and healthcare websites.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... Following from that when dealing with shared electronic health records (SEHR), citizens, as the identified individuals of such health records, have to be enabled to decide what medical data can be used in which way by medical professionals. In this context individual preferences of privacy have to be reflected by authorization policies enforced to control access to personal health records. We see two potential challenges, when enabling patient-controlled access control policy authoring: First, an ordinary citizen is considered a non-security expert, thus not necessarily aware of implications of her/his actions of defining access control to protect personal health data. Second, permissions to access medical data are necessary to support the daily routines of medical personnel. The better the health-care information system supports these work procedures the more effective and useful it is. There should be a balance between access restrictions through privacy settings and required access permissions in order to allow the system to be effective. In this paper we present a case study in the context of SEHR in Austria. In this scenario we identify different types of authorization policies to support individuals' privacy. Patient privacy is an important factor in access decision making, but in order to ensure the privacy - effectiveness balance, citizen-authors of policies should be informed about implications of their privacy settings on the underlying information system. To ensure this balance, policies need to be analysed. In this paper we describe a policy analysis method based on generated rules to evaluate the consequences of citizens privacy settings. Analysis results can then be used to inform and support a citizen during the policy authoring process.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... Such environments are essential to achieve closed-loop behavior, and an emphasis on interoperability standards and reconfigurable hardware/software components will allow these systems to adapt to changing patient/provider needs and technologies. Intelligent medical system design often focuses on smart, complex on-device algorithms. This paper addresses the use of a Medical Device Coordination Framework from the complementary perspective, where devices stream data to an information infrastructure populated with rearrangeable components that can be cascaded to form complex processing apps, or \"transformers.\"\u0000 This approach enables a new paradigm for the design of medical devices that we refer to as \"medical platform-oriented devices\" (MPODs): devices constructed from sensors/actuators integrated with a medical acquisition and analysis platform that hosts sophisticated software component collections while providing a variety of safety and real-time features relevant to the medical device domain. These components provide capabilities that may have been unsuitable for direct microprocessor implementation, promote the use of parallel analyses (e.g., for parameter verification), and enable the construction of reconfigurable apps.\u0000 To demonstrate this approach, a set of reconfigurable, component-based software apps was developed to address medical devices that utilize photoplethysmograms (PPGs). The first app builds upon the behavior of an existing wireless reflectance pulse oximeter that (a) processes raw PPGs to ascertain heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and respiration rate and (b) makes decisions regarding PPG viability. Other apps address the calculation of pulse wave velocity using multiple PPGs and closed-loop control of PPG quality when determining blood pressure and stroke volume. These scenarios demonstrate the immense potential that a component pool and its related app library provide for biomedical signal analyses and the creation of reconfigurable virtual medical devices.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... But the knowledge used in most such systems 1. exists only for few well known broad domains; 2. is of a basic nature: either purely hierarchical or involves only few relationship types; and 3. is not always kept up-to-date missing insights from recently published results. In this paper we present a framework and implementation of a focused and up-to-date knowledge-based search system, called Scooner, that utilizes domain-specific knowledge extracted from recent bioscience abstracts. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt in the field to address all three shortcomings mentioned above. Since recent introduction for operational use at Applied Biotechnology Branch of AFRL, some biologists are using Scooner on a regular basis, while it is being made available for use by many more. Initial evaluations point to the promise of the approach in addressing the challenge we set out to address.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... In this paper, we present a context vector approach that can compute the semantic relatedness between any pair of concepts in the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). Our approach has been developed on a corpus of inpatient clinical reports. We use 430 pairs of clinical concepts manually rated for semantic relatedness as the reference standard. The experiments demonstrate that incorporating a combination of the UMLS and WordNet definitions can improve the semantic relatedness. The paper also shows that second order co-occurrence vector measure is a more effective approach than path-based methods for semantic relatedness.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... The design of patient-facing views of clinical information is, however, a relatively recent line of inquiry. Research is needed to further understand guidelines for communicating specific types of information to hospital patients. In this work, we focus on cardiology patients' information needs related to their hospital medications. We assessed these needs to inform the design of interactive, electronic views of medication information for cardiology inpatients. We present results of in-situ interviews with 11 inpatients and 6 nurses in a cardiology step-down unit. Our findings suggest that cohesive trends in medication information needs exist across cardiology inpatients. We discuss interview results and their implications for the design of inpatient-facing information technology. We also discuss key ways in which electronic medication information, formatted for inpatient use, differs from that formatted for outpatient or transitional medication-management use.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ... One of the current challenging health care problems is the increasing aging population. The population of the US, as well as the other industrialized countries is aging rapidly. By 2030, 20% of the US population will be over the age of 65. The average life expectancy is projected to increase to age 81 by 2030. This aging population is going to bring new challenges to our society, such as an increase in age-related diseases, rising health care costs, shortage of health care professionals, and lack of quality care for everyone. In this tutorial, we will explore intelligent technologies and methods that can help health care professionals to provide better quality care for the older adults, monitor their health conditions in place, as well as technologies that allow the older adults to live more independently.","PeriodicalId":90523,"journal":{"name":"IHI ... : proceedings of the ...
