This exploratory case study of the role of TCM reveals how the use of TCM in a Chinese National Healthy Living Centre (CNHLC) raises the visibility of TCM as a Chinese cultural practice and challenges the relationship between ‘traditional’ medicine use and Chinese health inequalities. In this charitable mono‐ethnic context, TCM performs a plural function: on the one hand, Chinese ethnicities are a social disadvantage, providing rational justification for a culturally specific TCM service. On the other hand, the Chinese provision and use of TCM ‘fills the healthcare gap’, providing counter cultural means of building Chinese health and social capital in the UK healthcare market.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"38-43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0509","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70550308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A mixed method study involving a national survey and in‐depth interviews was undertaken in response to reports of patchy service provision and particular concerns about potentially unmet needs among BME women. Findings indicate that the surprising number of professional groups (n=27) involved in delivering perinatal mental health care were predominantly located in secondary care. Perceptions of the validity of ‘BME‐specific’ services were equivocal. Service delivery for minority women tended to focus on language and translation; which might facilitate assessment and physical (though not psychological) care but would do little to address women's cultural needs.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"24-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0507","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70549858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Walsall, the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) worked with Muslim organisations to raise awareness on safeguarding local children. The Madressah Project focused on places where large numbers of Muslim children went each day for religious education.The aims of the Madressah project were:• to provide information and guidance to parents, carers and Mosques/Madressahs on ensuring the safety of their children• to advise Madressahs on their legal obligations• to provide advice on safe recruitment• to provide child protection training to the Mosques/Madressahs.The project resulted in an action plan and Good Practice Guide. Social marketing is the application of marketing concepts and techniques to achieve behavioural goals for social good. For BME groups, which often have worse health outcomes than the general population, social marketing can be an effective method to support targeted interventions for improved health and well‐being and reduced health inequalities. This paper describes some examples of social marketing approaches aimed at improving the health and well‐being of BME communities. The examples show positive outcomes overall and provide some key learning points for future work in this area.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"27-31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0343","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70549320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By analysing one year's data for all hospital admissions with a cardiac diagnosis, we have shown that there are differences in the pattern of care between ethnic groups. Patients from a black and minority ethnic background tend to have an age profile that is 10 years younger than the majority white population. This finding is even more pronounced in those from deprived areas. We also show that black and minority ethnic patients have a different mix in respect of the proportion that is admitted for definitive treatment rather than for heart attacks. This preliminary finding may have explanations other than inequitable access to treatment.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"13-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0341","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70549700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Women from a black and minority ethnic background are widely believed to have particular needs that are often not given the attention they deserve. NHS Croydon launched a perinatal mental health project to develop a closer and better partnership between the Primary Care Trust (PCT), Croydon Council and black and minority ethnic (BME) voluntary organisations through an action learning approach. Experience was shared to improve engagement and use of health services by mothers from BME communities in Croydon who had encountered mental health problems during pregnancy or following childbirth. By exploring and identifying such issues and problems, the action learning set endeavoured to find solutions for a joined‐up approach to achieve identifiable benefits. Some problems were encountered, such as a lack of communication between health professionals and BME community groups. The learning outcomes were to raise awareness and to recognise the cultural differences with mothers of BME background experiencing perinatal mental health problems. The learning from the project will be disseminated to a wider audience to promote best practice.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"38-43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0345","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70549904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

West Midlands Ethnic Minority Liaison Committee (WELCOME) and partners organised a conference to arrive at consensus among experts and stakeholders and to make recommendations around reducing infant mortality. One key area discussed, which is often contentious, was cousin marriage: its potential impact on infant and perinatal mortality and what health service response to this should be. Recommendations included: the setting up of a community genetic service in areas with higher risk of recessive disorders as a consequence of cousin marriage; genetic education to the wider public and health professionals; and community engagement, including community and religious leaders. This paper outlines how these recommendations were arrived at, the potential barriers identified in addressing this issue and the process by which service change was achieved with an aim to improve the outcome of infant and perinatal health among groups with higher burdens of genetic disorders in Walsall.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"21-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0342","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70549272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were compiled from Office for National Statistics estimates of international migration, National Insurance Number applications from overseas nationals, ‘Flag 4’ GP registrations by new immigrants, United Kingdom Border Agency asylum bulletins, and Citizens Advice Bureau immigration queries. It is estimated that there has been a steady influx of between 800 and 1,400 new migrants per year into Walsall. The majority are young adults from Asia and Eastern Europe, and are living in the southern part of the borough. This information needs to be updated regularly, shared with relevant partners and used to inform commissioning decisions.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"6-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0340","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70549645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional models of leadership can tend to focus on individuals and do not take into account the fact that patient care usually involves a number of staff from several organisations. The project was designed to test the hypotheses that provision of structured support to teams using a shared leadership model would lead to improvements in partnership working and patient outcomes. The project showed significant improvements in partnership working and enabled greater engagement with the BME communities in Walsall. The paper explores the strengths and weakness of the shared leadership model and the challenges in translating the vision into reality.","PeriodicalId":90494,"journal":{"name":"Ethnicity and inequalities in health and social care","volume":"3 1","pages":"44-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5042/EIHSC.2010.0346","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70549979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
