This study utilized a pre-/post-design with residents’ rating their tranquility level and a certified Nurse Aid observer rating each resident’s perceived tranquility level both before and after the video intervention using a Tranquility Scale. Statistical analyses suggested that residents’ tranquility levels from both residents’ and staff’s perspectives showed significant improvement after the intervention compared to their baseline. These findings are discussed in relation to the literature on nature-based and music therapies. We also offer practical implications for recreational therapists and memory care workers. ","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46477878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study examined the effects of a multidisciplinary intervention program, including recreational therapy (RT) and speech therapy, among individuals with IPD or PD plus conditions over 16 weeks. The study included six participants with IPD and a participant with progressive supranuclear palsy (PD plus condition). Participants with IPD attended a weekly LOUD Crowd® program consisting of different speech and cognitive activities. In addition, all seven participants attended an RT intervention focusing on fall prevention education and implementing balance, strength, and endurance routines. Results indicated improvements in dynamic balance, reduced fall risk, cognition, swallowing, and voice-related outcomes. In conclusion, a multidisciplinary intervention program is beneficial for individuals with PD or PD plus conditions. ","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46823756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the virtues is forming friendships with people receiving TR/RT services. Though intriguing, Sylvester’s conclusion has not garnered much interest from TR/RT scholars so the purpose of this paper is to generate greater awareness of and engagement with the topic. The goal is achieved by connecting the topic to a theoretical framework utilized in the profession, reviewing a historical discourse on friendship, and supplementing that account with contemporary findings. This paper concludes by listing some potential benefits of and impediments to developing friendships, and briefly discussing how professionals can foster friendly, therapeutic environments when friendships are inappropriate or impossible to form.","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46483973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is unclear if RTs have the knowledge or perceive SARs as a relevant facilitation technique. This study sought to understand if a professional continuing education session on SARs improves comfort level. Seventy RTs and students attended the training and completed a retrospective survey. The findings suggest that the training improved participants’ interest and willingness to incorporate SARs, felt less intimidated by the prospect of incorporating SARs, less afraid of making a mistake while using SARs, and found SARs to be a relevant intervention. Further studies are warranted to understand the use of SARs within RT practice. Incorporating emerging technology into practice may create innovative therapeutic interventions to address clinical outcomes.","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42721245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, the social stigma associated with receiving supportive health services prevents many veterans from receiving assistance through traditional means. Others decline assistance out of a well-intentioned concern that using supportive resources will prevent other people with a greater need from receiving support. Also, researchers have found that the quality of a veteran’s social context, particularly regarding their perceptions of social support, are highly predictive of psychological wellbeing, including decreased vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and decreased risk of suicide. Ultimately, the pervasive nature of psychological and social challenges among returning veterans, combined with the barriers to quality care and critical importance of social support reinforces the need for nontraditional ways of enhancing social support among the veteran community. Therefore, the purpose of this scoping review is to explore the potential social benefits of nature-based recreation (NBR) for veterans. Findings will be used to support the belief that recreation therapists have the potential to address the social needs of veterans by providing a variety of nature-based recreational therapy (RT) services.","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45225176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recreational therapy has provided interventions for PTSD and other disorders affecting veterans of the United States military throughout the decades. Recreational therapists search out effective interventions for veterans who will be in congruence with the military culture and allow for greatest impact on the related disorders. Mandala and free-form drawing are expressive interventions that fit within the military culture and have potential to bring about functional change for veterans living with PTSD. The findings of a recent study with veterans living with PTSD provides support for the inclusion and further exploration of both types of expressive interventions for veterans living with PTSD. ","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47452107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One way this is accomplished is through participation in adaptive fitness. This study explored perceived outcomes and experiences associated with daily and competitive involvement in adaptive fitness by individuals with physical disabilities. Individuals were recruited from the 2015 Working Wounded Games (WWGs). Semistructured interviews were conducted with ten participants. Using directed content analysis, six themes emerged, including four themes from daily involvement and two themes from competitive involvement. Results support adaptive fitness as a unique opportunity for individuals with disabilities to engage in a healthy lifestyle by improving their physical, emotional, and social health with increased community involvement. Implications for recreational therapist (RT) practice are discussed. ","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42013191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While fall risk decreases when individuals engage in PA programs focused on fall prevention, enrollment in such programs remains low. The purpose of this feasibility study was to pilot questions for development of a participant survey used to explore the perceptions and motivations of older adults currently enrolled in a health promotion program called Bingocize®. The program combines fall prevention exercises with the familiar game of bingo. Study participants included a convenience sample of four older adults currently residing in a LTCF. A phenomenological qualitative research approach using video recorded interviews was chosen for the exploratory study. Results revealed that older adults viewed the overall program as enjoyable, identifying social aspects such as intergenerational connection with program facilitators as motivation for participation. Focusing attention on these factors may assist future implementation of the intervention and to promote higher levels of participation in fall prevention programs centered on PA.","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45694023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simultaneously, there has been a vast growth of online conferences and the increased need for telehealth. The entire nation has struggled with feelings of uncertainty and fear mixed with moments of positivity. At the same time, older adults and people of any age who have underlying health conditions are faced with information from local, national, and international news and health organizations that their lives were at risk. Then, new terms emerged and became part of our daily vocabulary. Stay home. Social distancing. Shelter in place. Essential items. Curbside pick-up. Pandemic. It appears that these words will become part of our everyday vocabulary, forever etched in history books, engrained in our hearts, and the mindset of generations to come.","PeriodicalId":90432,"journal":{"name":"American journal of recreation therapy","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49499672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
