As a criminology graduate recently released from a long prison sentence, I gather and analyse the thoughts, emotions, and experiences of the prison to community living transition to contrast and compare my experience with relevant academic literature through the lens of convict criminology. Furthermore, I draw upon relevant fi rst-hand knowledge of desistance and re-entry as each occurs to assess the current rehabilitative climate in Scotland. I discuss the notion of “judicial rehabilitation” and the eff ects of a criminal record in modern society, questioning the impact of these subtle forms of punishment upon those leaving custody. In doing so, I question whether more could be done to catalyse and sustain these transitions in the hope that society can better enable people to desist and eventually lead fulfi lling crime-free lives upon their re-entry.","PeriodicalId":90234,"journal":{"name":"Journal of prisoners on prisons","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41772459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The account highlights the notion that initial ‘up-front’ desistance work can be a process of co-production where all those involved engage in a journey of discovery in which the seeds of desistance are planted and begin to take root. The interplay between practitioners and service users involved navigating issues including vulnerability, trust and the impact of environmental factors, as well as highlights the idea that initial desistance eff orts result from co-produced eff orts between the person initiating change and those tasked with supporting this process. The paper calls for greater attention to the lived experience of facilitating early desistance transitions, as this will result in furthering our understanding of desistance processes.","PeriodicalId":90234,"journal":{"name":"Journal of prisoners on prisons","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45234579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
