Depending on the severity and onset of hearing loss and coexisting vestibular dysfunction, USH is divided into three clinical types – USH1, USH2, USH3 – as well as atypical USH which combines features of all these three. The purpose of this review is to present the impact of cochlear implantation on speech development in children diagnosed with all types of Usher syndrome. All relevant publications published in from 2013 to 2023 were retrieved from PubMed based on the keywords Usher syndrome, Usher syndrome diagnostics, Usher syndrome hearing loss, Usher syndrome cochlear, and Usher syndrome speech. Exactly 67 papers were selected.Bilateral cochlear implantation in children with Usher syndrome is beneficial for audiological and verbal development provided that hearing loss is detected early and implantation done promptly. In USH1 the preferred age is before 3 in the case of severe to profound congenital\u0000SNHL; in USH2 and USH3 the optimal time for implantation is hampered by the difficulty of estimating when hearing loss occurred and its rate of progression. After bilateral cochlear implantation, studies showed improvements in the categories of auditory performance (CAP),\u0000speech intelligibility rate (SIR), meaningful auditory integration scale (MAIS), meaningful use of speech scale (MUSS), and speech reception score (SRS), together with good development of speech perception and verbal communication.Early diagnosis (before the onset of vision loss) and early bilateral cochlear implantation in children who have suffered severe to profound SNHL due to Usher syndrome reduces disability and maximizes auditory–oral communication skills, significantly increasing their quality of life.

The present study aimed to investigate how self-perceived musical competence correlates with musicians’ ratings of their own abilities in speech perception, spatial hearing, and sound qualities. The Edinburgh Lifetime Musical Experience Questionnaire (ELMEQ) was administered on 57 instrumentalists aged 19 to 53 years (mean = 25.1 ± 4.9 years, 34 males and 23 females). All had normal hearing and had undergone formal training on musical instruments for 1–2 years. All of them also regularly practised music for at least 1–2 h/week. Based on their ELMEQ scores, they were divided into two groups: low (ELMEQ score ≤ 7; n = 12) and high (ELMEQ score ≥ 11; n = 16; self-perceived musical competence. Participants were sent\u0000a modified questionnaire from the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ) using Google forms, and the data statistically analysed.A Mann–Whitney U-test showed that participants with high self-rated musical competence had significantly higher ratings on the spatial hearing and sound qualities sub-domains of SSQ compared to their counterparts who had lower ELMEQ scores. However, both groups scored about the same on the speech perception domain of SSQ. A Spearman test revealed a moderate to strong positive correlation between self-rated musical competence and SSQ ratings in each domain. The findings show that instrumentalists with high self-rated musical competence exhibited high proficiency in the spatial hearing and sound quality domains of auditory processing.

Of these, 111 were on females aged 18 to 76 years, and 71 on males aged 18 to 82 years. Diagnosis comprised a medical history, otolaryngological physical examination, ultrasonography (USG), fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of tumor, laboratory tests (CBC, CRP), and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Predominantly (176 patients), benign tumors and neoplasms were found in the parotid salivary gland. Histopathology most commonly revealed pleomorphic adenoma (PA, 74 cases) and Warthin’s tumor (WT, 70 cases). Other benign tumors and neoplasms made up only 18% of cases. Malignant neoplasms were only identified in the parotid salivary gland in 3.3% of cases; these were diagnosed as epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and ductal carcinoma. In our dataset, most patients with tumors of the major salivary glands were operated on at ages above 60 years. A low incidence of malignant tumors and a high incidence of WT of the large salivary glands were observed. The main postoperative complication was facial nerve paresis in 7.6% of cases.

From\u00002008 to 2019, the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing (IPPH) implemented a program to screen the hearing of Polish children\u0000starting school, covering over 1 million children. Its success prompted the development of a screening model to cover the entire process of\u0000verbal communication. One result was the "Equal Start in Education", a program implemented from 2019 to 2022 in the Lublin province,\u0000otherwise known as the "Lublin Program for Early Detection and Therapy of Communication Disorders in Children Starting School". It was\u0000conducted by the University Children’s Clinical Hospital in Lublin and the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, in cooperation with IPPH,\u0000and was designed to assess hearing, auditory processing, voice, and speech-language. The program was successful in addressing various issues\u0000related to the screening of all communication skills. Here we present findings from the program and propose a testing procedure used to\u0000evaluate speech. The screening procedure might be applied more widely in the future, and could diagnose those children requiring audiological\u0000and speech-language therapy.

The exact mechanism for triggering the symptoms is not fully\u0000understood. The condition occurs in all age groups and without gender predilection. The purpose of the study was to review the literature on vestibular paroxysmia, discuss criteria for the diagnosis of the disease, diagnostic management, proposed therapy, and present clinical cases from the authors’ own practice.A review of the scientific literature was conducted via the PubMed database using the keywords “vestibular paroxysmia,” “neurovascular conflict cochlear nerve,” and “neurovascular conflict vestibular nerve”. PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews were applied. There were 146 publications found; after analysis of titles and abstracts, 56 were included in the review; another 10 manuscripts were identified during reference review. Among them, 11 studies were devoted to diagnostic imaging, 19 described the clinical course of the condition\u0000based on retrospective studies, 15 were case reports, and 11 other reports and reviews. Following evaluation of this literature, two clinical cases of vestibular paroxysm from the authors’ own practice are described. These cases are presented along with their diagnosis and therapy.Imaging studies are of significant value in diagnosing many vascular–neural conflicts, but for vestibular paroxysmia the diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical symptoms and according to the division proposed by the Bárány Society in 2016. Pharmacological therapy is\u0000recommended, and response to therapy is one of the criteria for diagnosing the condition. Surgical treatment is reserved for the most severe cases.

A deficit in the ability to process spoken language can result in CAPD. The aim of this study was to develop a test (PPT-M) to evaluate the level of phonological processing among young Marathi-speaking adults. A second aim was to investigate the difference in the phonological processing of words and non-words.The PPT-M test included three subtests: phonological awareness, phonological working memory, and phonological retrieval. For the awareness and memory tasks, the stimulus was words and non-words, whereas rapid automatised naming (RAN) of digits and letters was used to assess the retrieval task. Data was collected from 40 young adults aged 18 to 25 years. We recorded accuracy and time taken to complete the tasks. Results of item analysis suggest that the developed tool has good reliability. No significant gender effect was observed. A stimulus effect was observed for the phonological processing test. The Phonological Processing Test in Marathi (PPT-M) has good internal consistency and reliability. Words and non-words are processed differently and the time required to respond to both varies. There were no gender differences. In the phonological awareness test,\u0000blending and segmentation tasks required more time to complete and had reduced accuracy.

These children’s speech\u0000exhibits multiple phoneme omission, substitution, and distortion errors. Auditory processing disorders (APD) are associated with speech\u0000sound disorders. Since APD prevents the development of a stable representation of phonemes in the brain, it may cause speech issues and\u0000make semantics, syntax, and phonology challenging to acquire. The review summarises behavioral findings of auditory processing abilities\u0000in children with SSD. The study used a literature search of electronic databases (Google Scholar, Science Direct, Research Gate, PubMed)\u0000from 2007 to 2022. The retrieved articles were assessed in two stages: title and abstract screening, followed by a full-length article review. Six\u0000articles were selected after the full-length review of 12 shortlisted articles. The review of the articles showed that temporal processing abilities\u0000are affected in children with SSD. Thus, temporal processing is critical for developing phonological awareness because it is vital for perceiving\u0000and rapidly changing acoustic cues in speech. The close relationship between temporal processing and phonological awareness in children with\u0000SSD highlights the importance of including temporal processing assessment in these children. Appropriate auditory training which taps into\u0000temporal processing skills may improve phonological awareness in these children. The effect of auditory processing training on phonological\u0000skills in SSD children needs further study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate auditory perception and speech development in children with enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) and to relate the results to the diagnosis of Pendred syndrome (PS), imaging findings, surgical course, and postoperative period. The study group consisted of 49 children with EVA, aged 11 months to 15 years, with severe to profound hearing loss. The EVA patients included 22 with PS and 27 with nonsyndromic EVA (NSEVA). The control group consisted of 46 children with nonsyndromic deafness. Outcomes after cochlear implantation were evaluated annually for at least 10 years. Auditory performance was assessed by categories of auditory performance (CAP) and Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (MAIS). Speech outcomes were evaluated by Speech Intelligibility Rating Scale (SIR) and Meaning Use of Speech Scale (MUSS). Genetic counselling, imaging studies, and vestibular testing were also evaluated when available. All patients included in the study benefited from cochlear implants, especially when implantation was performed before the age of 3 years. After CI, EVA patients (PS and NSEVA) achieved a steeper rate of increase in auditory perception and speech intelligibility, demonstrating higher scores at each follow-up point compared to nonsyndromic patients (NS). There were no differences in auditory and speech perception between NSEVA and PS patients. In addition to EVA, the most commonly diagnosed malformation was incomplete partition type 2 (IP-2), the presence of which negatively affected postoperative outcomes. During cochleostomy, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)/perilymph leakage was observed in 50% of implanted ears, but its presence did not affect the final outcomes.Early cochlear implantation is associated with satisfactory speech and auditory development in children with EVA. Due to the presence of inner ear malformations in patients with Pendred syndrome, detailed imaging of the temporal bone is indicated. Despite the frequent occurrence of CSF/perilymph leakage during cochleostomy, patients with EVA benefit satisfactorily from cochlear implantation.

The exact cognitive and neuronal brain underpinnings of the disorder are still a matter of investigation. The relationship between the audiovisual phonemic short-term memory and particular language abilities was examined among 7–9 year-old children with DLD as well as in a gender, age, and IQ-matched control group. Children were assessed with a standard language battery and the Stanford–Binet scale (SB5). Subsequently, they performed a short-term memory task requiring immediate recall of sequences composed of syllables presented audiovisually. There were lower levels of audiovisual phonemic memory among children with DLD. They performed significantly worse than matched typically developing (TD) children in the experimental task and their performance was correlated with scores obtained in each\u0000language subtest. In contrast, we did not find between-group differences in visual short-term operational memory measured on the SB5 scale. The present experiment replicated previous findings about short-term phonemic memory impairment in the DLD population. We found that memory impairment also occurs even if phoneme information is presented simultaneously in the auditory and visual domains.\u0000It appears that non-linguistic spatial cues accompanying phoneme stimuli do not overcome phonemic short-term memory impairment.

For each ICF category, the most commonly used audiological assessment tools and methods were identified. The most relevant codes for Body functions and structures, Activities and Participation as well as Environmental factors were identified. These were the following. Body structures: structure of the inner ear (s260), auditory nerve (s260), brainstem (s1105), midbrain (s1101), diencephalon (s1102), and cortical lobe (s110). Hearing functions: sound detection (b2300), sound discrimination (b2301), localization of sound source (b2302), lateralization of sound (b2303), and speech discrimination (b2304). Activities and participation: listening (d115);\u0000communicating with (receiving) spoken messages (d310); handling stress and other psychological demands (d240); using communication devices and techniques (d360); conversation (d350); family relationships (d760); school education (d820); paid employment (d850); and community life (d910).
