The field may be evaluated by considerations of a net zero current due to the absence of an applied axial electric field. We elaborate on the theoretical aspects of streaming potential from fundamental considerations of electrostatics and fluid mechanics. Later, we focus on an exciting and futuristic application of streaming potential, where the induced electric field is tapped to drive a current through an external resistor thereby allowing one to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.","PeriodicalId":89942,"journal":{"name":"International journal of micro-nano scale transport","volume":"5 1","pages":"109-130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1260/1759-3093.5.3.109","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66152022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flow between the parallel plates is considered fully developed both hydrodynamically and thermally. Uniform heat flux boundary condition is assumed. The fluid is supposed to be non Newtonian, following a power law model. To model the slip, Navier's linear slip law has been used. The spatial distribution of fluid velocity, non dimensional temperature, non dimensional entropy generation and Bejan number has been investigated for different slip length ratios. For dilatants fluids, it is found that that the effect of slip length is significant and cannot be neglected.","PeriodicalId":89942,"journal":{"name":"International journal of micro-nano scale transport","volume":"4 1","pages":"117-132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1260/1759-3093.4.3-4.117","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66151539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a dearth of studies is particularly acute in streaming potential flows which are naturally predisposed to strongly influence even simple pressure-driven flows in such narrow confinements. Further, the very nature of the fluid may, in general cases, be of non-Newtonian nature; this is especially true for biomedical assays. Motivated by this, we address a model problem of a streaming potential mediated flow of a power-law fluid through a slit channel having different boundary conditions. Additionally, as an important new contribution to this line of investigation, we study the thermal characteristics of such flow. For measurement of thermal conductivity of bulk films we have methods like Guarded Hot Plate method, Flash method and for thin films we have methods like Thermo reflectance and Photo acoustic methods. What makes 3ω method different from other methods is that it can be used over a wide range of film thicknesses ranging from nano scale to milli meters. The purpose of the present study is to validate the method and measure thermal conductivity and thermal interface resistance of thin films of varying thickness. In the present study, we have measured thermal conductivity of thin films of SiO2 of varying thickness deposited on Si substrate and thermal interface resistance of their interfaces. The complete physics of gas-surface interaction in micro/nano channels in the non continuum regime is yet to be understood. The important parameters that are relevant to such interactions include energy and momentum accommodation coefficients. The study reported in this paper aims at implementing a relatively simple methodology for calculating different accommodation coefficients. Energy accommodation coefficient (EAC) and normal momentum accommodation coefficient (NMAC) are the main focus of the study. The accommodation coefficients for the different equilibrium states are calculated. Instead of tracking individual collision, a collection of collisions are considered for the calculations. The EAC and NMAC reported here are found to be influenced by gas-wall temperature difference and Knudsen number in the transition regime.","PeriodicalId":89942,"journal":{"name":"International journal of micro-nano scale transport","volume":"4 1","pages":"107-116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66151505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The axial thermal conductivity of CNTs were found to be exceptionally high, which makes them one of the favourable candidates for the next generation thermal management devices. Previous works have indicated that the presence of confined fluid molecules inside the CNT lead to a reduction in the thermal conductivity of the CNT. In the present study, we investigate the effect of confined liquid flow through CNTs on the thermal transport of CNTs. Spectral energy density method is used to predict the phonon properties and lifetimes of the CNT. The phonon mode lifetimes were found to be greater under flow compared to filled condition for smaller diameter CNTs. But the flow does not seem to modify signifcantly the phonon mode lifetimes of larger diameter CNTs. These variations in the thermal transport properties of CNT is explained using the changes occuring in the physical behavior of the confined fluid as the tube diameter changes.","PeriodicalId":89942,"journal":{"name":"International journal of micro-nano scale transport","volume":"4 1","pages":"77-84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1260/1759-3093.4.3-4.77","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66151605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results are compared to a flow regimes map developed based on numerical simulations covering wide range of parameters and liquids properties. The results are also compared to reported experimental measurements for co-flowing ionized water and PDMS oil in coaxial microtubes. Although captures the general trend, the linear instability analysis consistently under predicts and over predict the boundary between transition and jetting at low and high Cad, respectively. This is because the analysis neglects the secondary perturbations and the inertia of the disperse liquid. Nonetheless, the linear instability analysis is a nearly accurate predicative approach that is much faster than performing Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations or conducting experiments.","PeriodicalId":89942,"journal":{"name":"International journal of micro-nano scale transport","volume":"4 1","pages":"51-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66151945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
