The concerted action of many enzymes regulates the way each mRNA is degraded. Moreover, the degradation of each mRNA is influenced by the environment surrounding the cell. The conection between the environment and changes in the half-lifes of mRNAs is regulated by the activity of stress activated MAP kinases (SAPKs) and their substrates. Here we will describe some of those mechanisms, and how SAPKs regulate mRNA stability in eukaryotic cells.</p>","PeriodicalId":89510,"journal":{"name":"Topics in current genetics","volume":"20 ","pages":"159-170"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/4735_2007_0248","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"29990921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The core reaction of homologous recombination, homology search and DNA strand invasion, along with the proteins catalyzing it, are conserved throughout evolution in principle. However, the increased complexity of eukaryotic genomes and the diversity of eukaryotic cell biology pose additional challenges to the recombination machinery. It is not surprising that this increase in complexity coincided with the evolution of new recombination proteins and novel support pathways, as well as changes in the properties of those eukaryotic recombination proteins that are evidently conserved in evolution. In humans, defects in homologous recombination lead to increased cancer predisposition, underlining the importance of this pathway for genomic stability and tumor suppression. This review will focus on the mechanisms of homologous recombination in eukaryotes as elucidated by the biochemical analysis of yeast and human proteins.</p>","PeriodicalId":89510,"journal":{"name":"Topics in current genetics","volume":"17 ","pages":"95-133"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/978-3-540-71021-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"29865838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
