However, its properties are not well characterized due to the availability of poled PVDF only as a thin film. In the design of piezoelectric devices, properties such as all the components of the elastic stiffness tensor, dielectric tensor, and the electromechanical coupling tensor are needed. Poled PVDF is of mm2 symmetry. The frequency dependences of all nine complex elastic constants as well as the three complex dielectric constants were measured using a thin film and stacked, cubical samples of PVDF film. The elastic constants C/sup D//sub 44/ and C/sup D//sub 55/ as well as the dielectric constant epsilon /sup T//sub 11/ and epsilon /sup T//sub 22/ reported are new. Ultrasonic measurements and an impedance analyzer were used to obtain the measured data.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The complexity of SPUDT filter design results from the fact that a SPUDT deliberately includes reflections internal to the transducer to cancel the effects of regeneration reflection. This destroys the validity of the impulse-response model which is the basis for all conventional SAW (surface acoustic wave) transducer designs. Although a recent generalization of the impulse response model includes effects of uniform internal reflections, it is of limited usefulness, because a high-performance SPUDT filter requires both weighted reflection and weighted transduction. Presented is a six-step SPUDT synthesis procedure which includes a new method for determining transduction and reflection weighting functions that satisfy a desired amplitude and phase response, achieve low insertion loss, achieve low triple transit, allow use of simple matching networks, and properly account for the interactions between transduction and reflection effects under matched conditions. Fundamental insertion-loss limitations for SPUDT filters are discussed and areas for future SPUDT research are outlined. Good experimental performance is demonstrated for a bandpass filter that uses a new SPUDT structure, the EWC/SPUDT, the geometry of which is also shown.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This microscope operates at 670 MHz and has a resolution of 5-10 mu m, depending upon the amount of defocus. Relative-velocity changes of sample surface waves as small as 50 parts per million are resolved. Images of the stress field at the tip of a 400- mu m-wide slot etched in alumina are presented and compared with a finite element simulation. The SPAM uses an unconventional acoustic lens with an anisotropic illumination pattern which can measure anisotropic effects and map residual stress fields with several-micrometer resolution and a stress sensitivity of 1/3 MPa in an alumina film.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This permits a more accurate assessment of possible bioeffects since the pressure is sensed at or near the site of the organs under investigation. The ultrasonic field is sampled using a calibrated seven-element linear array hydrophone of PVDF transducers, which is placed as close as possible to the ovary, embryo, or fetus, using a vaginal approach. The RF signals from the hydrophone are digitized at 50 Ms/s, and the maximum amplitude waveform received in the examination is recorded. The output of the clinical B-scanner is calibrated by the hydrophone in a water bath. From the hydrophone measurements, the in-vivo I/sub SPTA/, I/sub SPTP/, and I/sub SPPA/ can be computed. Further analysis allows the frequency-dependent tissue attenuation to be assessed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A hydrophone, scanned under computer control, was used to record spatial pressure-amplitude variations within the fields of disc-shaped piezoelectric transducers radiating into a water bath. The instrumentation system digitized the waveform at each point and estimated the amplitude of the fundamental frequency and the next three harmonics at 893 kHz. The results are compared to theoretical predictions based on a quasilinear approach and using the concept of plane and edge waves radiated from the disk transducer. It is shown that theory and experiment agree reasonably well for a transducer that approximates to a plane piston.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The utility for signal analysis and practical aspects of the computational implementation of the WD and of two smoothed versions of the WD are discussed. Criteria for the separation and identification of second-order effects are listed. Second-order effects of a broadband delay line incorporating chirped transducers with a center frequency of 380 MHz and a fractional bandwidth of 52% are analyzed. Signals overlapping in the time and frequency response are separated and the origin of these spurious signals is identified using the WD.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The internal energy density of infinitesimally small volume elements in thermodynamic equilibrium is calculated in the presence of a voltage on the electrodes, a clamped cantilever condition on one side of the beam, and a set of three different classical boundary conditions on the other side of the beam: a mechanical moment M at the end of the beam, a force F perpendicular to the beam, applied at its tip, and a body force p. The total internal energy content is calculated by integrating over the entire volume of the beam. The canonical conjugate of the moment is calculated as the angular deflection at the tip of the beam, while that of the force at the tip is the local vertical deflection. The canonical conjugate of the uniform load on the beam proves to be the volume displacement V of the beam. The equations are given in the direct form, with internal parameters (M,V), (F,V), and (p,V) as independent variables.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In contrast to FET detectors, the JFET can be designed without any metal gate structures in the SAW propagation path, because the gate consists of an implanted or diffused semiconductor structure. This results in a smooth surface, which reduces intertap reflections and improves the growth of the ZnO layer. The JFET fabrication is fully IC compatible, and electronic drive and control circuitry can be added to obtain a fully integrated, programmable filter. Monolithic test devices operating at 95 MHz have been realized in a ZnO-SiO/sub 2/-Si layered structure. The p/sup +/ gates of the n-channel JFETs are ion-implanted through a 0.1- mu m-thick oxide in an n/sup -/-type epilayer. Source and drain areas are formed by n/sup +/ diffusions. The metal contacts to the source, drain, and gate are placed outside the SAW propagation path. The untuned conversion efficiency of the tested JFET at 95 MHz was -49 dB, but it can be reduced significantly by optimizing the geometry of the JFET detector and using a high-frequency BIFET process.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A method for calibrating vibration pickups in the frequency range 10-30 kHz is described and illustrated with examples. The method requires two types of measurements: the driving-point impedance of the vibration exciter loaded by the test pickup and a known mass, and the voltage ratio of pickup output to driver input. The calibration formula is based on the Moebius transformation of two-port impedances and the product relationship of cascaded systems. The sensitivity of a pickup, in both magnitude and phase, is determined from three sets of observations, using calibrated masses and a programmable impedance/gain analyzer.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
