Throughout the intervening century, it has been overshadowed by the October coup, a testament, in part, to the incommensurable quantitative gap in favor of the latter when it came to research and documentary publications. This situation has begun to change only in the past two decades, when there was a marked trend toward renewed scholarly and public interest in the history of February (Pushkaeva, 2002) and quite a few foundational monographic studies, collections of articles, and documentary publications devoted to this event came out. Dozens of international and Russian scholarly conferences were also held and, of course, made a significant contribution to the development of a wide range of scholarly questions. A shift in research approaches has allowed for a significant broadening of the range of subjects being studied and for the more active use of previously unknown Russian and foreign sources. On the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution in 1889, for instance, the French erected the Eiffel Tower, one of the world’s most renowned landmarks, in a political environment that sought to legitimate the values of the Third Republic. A hundred years later, the glass and metal Louvre Pyramid, which serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum, opened. It, too, became a landmark of the city of Paris but in a strikingly different political climate in which politics had shifted to the center and right and some major historians questioned the results of the French Revolution. How has Russia commemorated the centennial of its equally consequential revolution? The journal Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History launched the conversation on this question with a forum, “State of the Field: 1917 on the Eve of the Centenary,” published in the fall 2015 issue of the journal, including reflections by historians S. A. Smith, Boris Kolonitskii (Kolonitsky), and Liudmila Novikova, and a reaction piece that I wrote. As Kolonitskii observed, despite the historiographical trend in both Western and some Russian scholarship to view the 1914–1922 period as a “continuum of crisis,” in historian Peter Holquist’s felicitous formulation, already by 2015 the politics of memory in Russia following the centenary of","PeriodicalId":89267,"journal":{"name":"Russian studies in history","volume":"58 1","pages":"1 - 9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10611983.2019.1686943","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44683421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For several years now, foreign colleagues have been asking: “How are people in Russia planning to mark the revolution’s centennial? How are they proposing to organize celebrations of the anniversary?” I usually laughed off the question, recalling the famous phrase about the “country with an unpredictable past.” Still, I did have some basis for making predictions (Kolonitskii, 2017). Not all of my assumptions proved correct, but some tendencies were easy to foresee. After all, politicians and public figures, writers and scholars, journalists and filmmakers all have rather limited financial and organizational resources for holding anniversary events, and the pool of qualified specialists needed to stage celebrations is rather small. Furthermore, the main participants in this process are constrained by their own past statements and actions. There are famous cases, of course, where commentators and even historians","PeriodicalId":89267,"journal":{"name":"Russian studies in history","volume":"58 1","pages":"44 - 53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10611983.2019.1673051","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41577275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

В этом контексте Великую российскую революцию 1917 г. нужно оценивать как эпохальное событие, приведшее к социально-экономической и политической трансформации Евразии и значительной части остального мира. Some researchers support the mythologized idea that Old Believers were largely sympathetic toward the revolution (Shakhnazarov, 2002, 2004, 2007; Pyzhikov, 2013, Taranets, 2010). However, most scholars maintain that there was not a great deal of opposition to the tsarist regime among Old Believers (Seleznev, 2005, 2014; Red’kina, 2003; Latypov, 2011, among others), and argue that the largest confessions and their leaders “were closely aligned with rightwing and, in some cases, centrist parties” (Borovik, 2003, p. 20; Red’kina, 2012a, p. 17; Moniakova, 2007). On the other hand, even before the April 17, 1905, religious tolerance ukaz was issued, the internal affairs minister, Prince P.D. SviatopolkMirsky, assured Old Believers that the emperor “loved” them (Trudy Shestogo Vserossiiskogo s”ezda staroobriadtsev, 1905, p. 49). In an April 16, 1905, telegram to Moscow’s governor general, Nicholas II himself expressed “trust and heartfelt goodwill toward Old Believers, long known for their unwavering devotion to the throne” (quoted from Makarov, 1998, p. 37).
