Among them are excitement, exertion, pain, the ingestion of food, the drinking of coffee or tea and the smoking of tobacco. Acceleration is observed also in numerous states of disease, such as thyrotoxicosis, infection, shock and hemorrhage. Transient tachycardia due to emotional disturbance, when the only sign of a disordered cardiovascular system, has not been considered clinically important. No careful analysis of this condition has been found in a survey of the literature. In monographs on diseases of the heart only casual mention is made of it. In the booklet on \"Standards of Physical Examination During Mobilization\" (MR 1-9), issued by the War Department on Oct. 15, 1942, it is specified that a heart will be considered normal when there is \"a pulse rate of 100 or over which is not","PeriodicalId":88740,"journal":{"name":"The Medical press of Egypt","volume":"32 20","pages":"207-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1945-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1001/JAMA.1945.02860430001001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50707833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their attempts to raise the P h of the gastric contents by the use of sodium bicarbonate were not particularly successful. While they failed to obtain adequate concentrations in the blood after administering solutions of penicillin orally, they were able to recover satisfactory antibacterial amounts in the urine and by this means successfully treated a urinary tract infection in a 6 month old infant. They suggested the use of capsules, but after unsuccessful attempts with phenyl salicylate coated vehicles, abandoned this method. There has been a great deal of debate about the mechanism of production of shock and about the relative role of various factors which may help in bringing it about, but in recent years it has been established primarily by the surgeons that the overwhelmingly important cause of surgical shock in man in good general condition prior to injury or operation is local loss of whole blood or plasma, or a combination of the two, from the circulation, thereby reducing the circulatory blood volume. If this reduction is sufficiently pronounced and prolonged, the blood pressure drops to a low level, anoxia develops, the tissues are damaged, there is generalized","PeriodicalId":88740,"journal":{"name":"The Medical press of Egypt","volume":"239 3","pages":"186-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1945-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1001/JAMA.1945.02860170021005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50706135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
