Paternal depressive symptoms were a strong predictor of adolescent outcome, even after controlling for family demographic variables, maternal depressive symptoms, and previous adolescent symptoms. Adolescent gender and perception of paternal hostility moderated this association such that females reporting high paternal hostility were particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of paternal depressive symptoms. Maternal and paternal depressive symptoms had an additive, rather than interactive, effect on adolescent functioning. These results contribute to our knowledge of the interpersonal processes by which depression runs in families and highlight the importance of including fathers in developmental research on adolescent internalizing problems.</p>","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"8 1","pages":"131-142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2911154/pdf/nihms162092.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"29158054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This conceptualization is based upon an inductive analysis of narrative transcripts of expectant fathers (N = 42), who were telling stories that illustrated what it meant to them to be a good father. Harmony focuses our attention on three elements of social context: that there are many contexts surrounding fatherhood (polyphony), that they are changing over time (movement), and that their relationships can be understood in various ways depending upon the situation of the observer (subjectivity). We hope that this metaphor will guide future work on fathers.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"8 1","pages":"3-23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.0801.3","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69843790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using consensual qualitative research (CQR) methodology to investigate fathers’ usage of parenting voice (I or We), we examined how paternal identity conjointness was similar and different between residential and non-residential fathers in each healthcare decision. Results revealed two new paternal identities, “self-as-detached” and “mixed.” Residential fathers expressed a self-as-co-parental identity in three of the five healthcare decisions, but shifted to a self-as-solo identity when deciding if their child would be circumcised. Non-residential fathers constructed a self-as-co-parental identity in two healthcare decisions while also expressing a self-as-detached identity and mixed identity in other healthcare decisions. Contextual and relational influences on paternal identity conjointness are identified. Implications of our findings for future research and practice are discussed.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"8 1","pages":"109-130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.0801.109","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69843428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present research sought to examine how a group of Australian foster fathers understand their role as fathers and their practices in creating families. More specifically, attention was paid to extending previous research that has found that foster fathers often parent in non-gender normative ways, and the implications of this for child-focused modes of care provision. Drawing on interviews and focus groups involving 31 gay and heterosexual foster fathers, most of whom were providing long-term care, the findings suggest that these men engage in child-focused approaches to care provision that provide a balance between adult’s and children’s needs and which involve a clear commitment to providing positive role models for children that often rework gender-normative approaches to parenting as men.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"8 1","pages":"24-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.0801.24","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69843726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explored the research question: Do the increased demands for childcare in triplet families provide an ecological context that leads to relatively high paternal involvement? The article reports findings based on 20 families, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Although most of the fathers were the single or primary breadwinners, their high level of involvement was more characteristic of fathers in dual-earner families. Paternal involvement began early, i.e. during their wife’s pregnancy, and was comprehensive, i.e. extended to virtually all childcare tasks. In addition, many of the fathers expressed work-family conflicts more typically reported by working mothers. Thus the study’s findings provide some support for the Reciprocity Hypothesis, a theoretical framework based in behavioral ecology.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"8 1","pages":"37-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.0801.37","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69843899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research questions were (1) Do measures of identity salience and centrality of the fathering role predict fathering involvement over time? (2) Does father involvement predict fathering identity over time? (3) Does father custody moderate these relationships? Involvement was assessed as contact frequency, number of father-child activities, and positive involvement observed during father-child interaction. Comparisons showed that the quantity of involvement differed by custody but there were few differences in the quality of involvement. Fathers did not exhibit significant mean decreases in involvement and custodial groups did not differ in the growth rates for involvement nor identity measures. However, there were significant individual differences in growth rates, meaning there was variance in fathers increasing and decreasing in measures over time. Time 1 father identities, measured as salience and centrality, predicted days per month, overnights per month, and father child activities over time. Time-varying predictors suggested that identities were more predictive of growth in involvement than vice versa although father involvement predicted salience and primarily centrality. This paper addresses previous limitations in fathering research by investigating both paternal and maternal involvement in understanding adolescent alcohol outcomes. When analyzed simultaneously, both shared communication with fathers and emotional closeness to fathers, but not shared activity participation, had a unique impact on each alcohol outcome, above and beyond maternal involvement factors. Workplace opposition is often cited for why men don’t take more leave. This study analyzes trends in company support for fathers taking parental leave and explores possible correlates of corporate support. Over time, companies have become more supportive of fathers leavetaking, partly attributed to women’s increased share of top management positions. However, the majority of companies are still unsupportive. Moreover, a class bias in support found to some extent in 1993 was more in evidence in 2006, with companies reporting that white-collar fathers receive more formal support from the company and more informal support from co-workers and managers than blue-collar fathers receive.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"7 1","pages":"303-321"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.0703.303","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69843362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
