The non-violent offender fathers in this study reported knowledge about parental empathy and beliefs about corporeal punishment parallel to what would be expected in the general population. A majority identified with and valued their fatherhood role. However, these fathers also reported depression, psychological difficulties, and personal adjustment problems that could diminish effective parenting and put them at risk for subsequent child abusing behaviors. Race and amount of contact with child during imprisonment were major factors associated with different parenting capacity dimensions. Research limitations and practice implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"10 1","pages":"159-177"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.1002.159","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69845538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Products of a dominant culture that deems “gay” and “father” as incompatible, they are subject to gender role strain. This phenomenological qualitative study explored 12 gay fathers’ perceptions of their gender roles around parenting. Participants discussed their decision to become parents, discipline and parenting roles, perceived views of others about their choice, and their fears and joys about raising children. Results indicated that gay fathers respond to gender role strain in ways that both contest and utilize traditional gender role expectations.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"10 1","pages":"119-139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.1002.119","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69845966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Father narratives about what fathers do well as parents were thematically coded for the presence of five fathering dimensions: emotional quality (how well father and child get along), involvement (amount of time spent together), provisioning (the amount of resources provided), discipline (the amount and success in parental control), and role modeling (teaching life lessons through example). Next, latent class analysis was used to identify three patterns of the likelihood of mentioning certain fathering dimensions: an <i>emotionally-involved</i> group mentioned emotional quality and involvement; an <i>affective-control</i> group mentioned emotional quality, involvement, discipline and role modeling; and an <i>affective-model</i> group mentioned emotional quality and role modeling. Profiles were significantly associated with subsequent adolescents' reports of adjustment such that adolescents of affective-control fathers reported significantly more externalizing behaviors than adolescents of emotionally-involved fathers.</p>","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"10 2","pages":"213-235"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/fth.1002.213","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32387213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depression not only directly interferes with parent involvement, it also impacts employment and relationships. The goal of this paper was to determine the level of depressive symptoms presented at program intake by 120 men who participated in two different responsible fathering programs, and to examine the relationship between levels of depressive symptoms, other assessed needs, and treatment plans. One-third of the sample expressed clinically high levels of depressive symptoms. Further, both high and medium levels of depressive symptoms were related to other assessed employment, co-parenting, and health needs. Unfortunately this was not reflected in treatment plans. We suggest fathering programs routinely screen participants for mental health needs, and include these results in treatment plans that are both comprehensive and individualized. We further recommend the addition of cognitive behavioral therapeutic elements to fathering programs.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"10 1","pages":"47-65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.1001.47","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69845772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is little available research, however, on the effectiveness of these programs in promoting involvement, or on the experiences of men and staff in building such programs. Despite the emergence of a new generation of federally-funded, state-funded, and locally-funded programs for fathers and families, a lack of available research means researchers and practitioners run the risk of losing valuable insight to inform better practices for fathering. Devoting a special issue of Fathering to these efforts is our attempt to make already existing programs more visible, to enhance dialogue between researchers and practitioners on evaluation and curriculum issues, and to celebrate the efforts of many \"on the ground\" who continue to seek ways to improve their efforts with a diverse population of fathers and father figures. The development of community-based programs and services targeting men in family life has significantly outpaced the available research literature on such programs. Such programs have emerged as a response to concerns about poor fathering and its contribution to social problems, as well as due to a desire to assist men in meeting the significant challenges of contemporary parenting. Fagan and Hawkins (2001) commented on the need for \"improved clinical and educational strategies to better support and promote fatherhood\" and also encouraged \"collaborative relationships between practitioners, researchers, and policymakers on behalf of fathers and families\" (p. 15). This collection of articles presents a portrait of the diverse programs targeting fathers across different contexts and the lessons they provide for furthering the linkages between supportive policies, programmatic interventions, and well-designed research and evaluation efforts. In the issue that follows, we are pleased to present six papers dealing with different aspects of community services for fathers and father figures in regions throughout the United States and Canada. These include papers which address what really works in fathering programs based on the most rigorous randomized design evaluations, an evaluation of the impact of a fathering newsletter as a cost-effective education tool, a critical assessment of men's mental health concerns in responsible fathering programs, and a qualitative exploration of the social service organizations that offer assistance tailored to young fathers' needs or those responsible for child and youth protection. We also present a case study that explores the creation of collaborative community partnerships in Milwaukee, and a clinically informed case model focused on increasing outreach, connection, and services to low-income non-custodial fathers in Connecticut. The Father Times newsletter was distributed weekly for six weeks to all families of kindergarten children at a local school. One hundred seventy-seven fathers responded to a self-report questionnaire regarding usage of the parenting newsletter, perceptions of the newsletter as a resource, and impacts on fathers’ attitudes, knowledge, behaviors, and father-child relationship quality. Two-thirds of fathers in the sample reported changing at least “somewhat” in all nine outcomes explored. Neither father age nor number of children in the home influenced fathering outcomes, but fathers with lower levels of education reported greater impacts from reading the newsletter. While the newsletter targeted fathers, 70% of mothers also read the newsletter suggesting that targeting fathers may be an effective way to continue to bring parent education to mothers. It further suggests that a fathering newsletter could be a useful tool for coparenting discussions. We conclude that directly reaching out to fathers and father figures can bridge the divide between men and parent education programs, providing an effective alternative to traditional parent education programs.","PeriodicalId":88482,"journal":{"name":"Fathering","volume":"10 1","pages":"31-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3149/FTH.1001.31","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69845668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
