Published studies have provided data on the efficacy and safety of the photoselective vaporization of the prostate laser procedure, which seems to have an expanding role in the management of special benign prostatic hyperplasia populations, including patients with large prostates, patients under anticoagulation treatment and high-risk patients with comorbidities. This paper presents the current status of the clinical outcomes of photoselective vaporization of the prostate in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction. Cost of the method, speed of tissue removal, need for larger high-quality studies with long-term follow-up and the introduction of the new 120-W high-performance system vaporization are also discussed this review.","PeriodicalId":88353,"journal":{"name":"Aging health","volume":"3 1","pages":"723-730"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2217/1745509X.3.6.723","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68187557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This clinical process is analogous to working within a complex adaptive system, where an intervention or change in one condition can produce unexpected outcomes. Except for decisions characterized by a high degree of professional agreement (e.g., influenza vaccination), most medical decisions affecting older adults occur within a ‘zone of complexity’ characterized by imperfect agreement regarding best practices and outcomes. An example is setting individual glycemic targets. Decisions within this zone are at best bounded by a few principles: first, ascertain the patient’s preferences and goals; second, determine health status by identifying relevant comorbid conditions, function and frailty; third, consider the risks and benefits, and estimate the likelihood that any intervention will achieve the patient’s healthcar...","PeriodicalId":88353,"journal":{"name":"Aging health","volume":"3 1","pages":"715-721"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2217/1745509X.3.6.715","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68187547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We undertook a pooled analysis of individual data from 13,282 patients aged 18–93 years in 16 published trials of ezetimibe and ezetimibe added on to or coadministered with a statin (ezetimibe/statin). Overall, ezetimibe reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 20% compared with placebo and ezetimibe/statin reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 17% compared with a statin alone, with consistent treatment effects across age groups (<65, 65–74 and ≥75 years). Rates of any adverse or drug-related adverse events were also similar across age groups. We conclude that the lipid efficacy and safety of ezetimibe and ezetimibe/statin in those aged 65–74 and 75 years and older are similar to those observed in patients aged under 65 years.","PeriodicalId":88353,"journal":{"name":"Aging health","volume":"3 1","pages":"691-705"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2217/1745509X.3.6.691","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68187511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is under-reported and under-treated, often because of mistaken assumptions that incontinence is a normal part of aging and that little can be done about it. There are effective treatments that can be easily implemented in the primary-care setting, which can greatly improve an older person’s quality of life and potentially avert premature referral to a nursing home. Therefore, it is important that clinicians screen for the problem and are comfortable with its evaluation and treatment. This article reviews the epidemiology of fecal incontinence, approaches to improving identification and quality of care, as well as the assessment and treatment of the most common etiologies of fecal incontinence.","PeriodicalId":88353,"journal":{"name":"Aging health","volume":"3 1","pages":"751-765"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2217/1745509X.3.6.751","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68187695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several reviews have been published to capture the main arguments of the studies from 1994 to 2000. This article aims to review published studies from 2000 onwards on PTSD among older people. These studies show that following their exposure to different types of traumas, older people have been shown to develop PTSD symptoms, a range of psychiatric comorbidity and cognitive and biological changes. On the whole, PTSD reactions do not vary across age groups, although this finding is not entirely conclusive. There seems to be evidence demonstrating ethnic differences in terms of PTSD reactions. Despite some anecdotal evidence, research has not focused on evaluating therapeutic interventions for older people with PTSD.","PeriodicalId":88353,"journal":{"name":"Aging health","volume":"3 1","pages":"743-749"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2217/1745509X.3.6.743","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68187687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although these three treatment choices confer a statistically equivalent likelihood of long- term disease-free survival, these therapies differ in their acute and long-term side-effect profiles. Brachytherapy is a minimally invasive radiotherapy procedure, and is an excellent treatment in men who do not want, or are unable to tolerate, a prostatectomy. The following article will present an overview of the epidemiology of prostate cancer, brachytherapy eligibility and a description of the techniques, side effects and efficacy, with a special emphasis on applicability to older men.","PeriodicalId":88353,"journal":{"name":"Aging health","volume":"3 1","pages":"653-661"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2217/1745509X.3.5.653","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68187455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
