She co-authored the trailblazing essay collection Look Me in the Eye: Old Women, Aging, and Ageism with her partner Barbara Macdonald in 1983; a second, expanded edition was issued in 1991. Another expansion of that edition was published in 2001 after Macdonald's death at age 86, so that the essays span more than twenty years of analysis and activism, addressing society's pervasive ageism from a feminist perspective. Rich lives in San Diego, where she is a co-founder of The Old Women's Project. According to the project website, the group \"works to make visible how old women are directly affected by all issues of social justice, and to combat the ageist attitudes that ignore, trivialize or demean us. We are a group of old women who use actions of various kinds to achieve this goal. We welcome women of all ages who wish to join in our actions\" (The Old Women's Project, 2005). During a telephone conversation, Rich commented on relationships between Women's Studies, ageism against old women, and activism. Whenever possible, the interviewer's (VBL) comments were omitted in order to focus on Rich's (CR) views.","PeriodicalId":88071,"journal":{"name":"NWSA journal : a publication of the National Women's Studies Association","volume":"18 1","pages":"12 - 3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69199677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our fantasies we see seniors in developing countries surrounded by happy grandchildren begging for another story. The reality is often very different. One in five of the poorest people of the world—those living on less than a dollar a day—are over 60 years of age. While their grown children leave for the cities, for Europe, the United States, or for the army, the elderly in developing nations struggle for daily survival. Moreover, the HIV/AIDS pandemic causes a profound change in the position of the older generation. After having taken care of their dying relatives, many grandparents are left with emotional and financial burdens, often including the task of raising grandchildren. There is an urgent need for a change of attitude toward the elderly, who should not be perceived as a burden to society but as key players in the productive and reproductive field.","PeriodicalId":88071,"journal":{"name":"NWSA journal : a publication of the National Women's Studies Association","volume":"18 1","pages":"105 - 99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69200052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Who now provides the respite care for such families? How is this experience lived out by same-sex couples estranged from any family support? How does this issue play out globally? The everydayness of the experiences of Gerber’s and Fuchs’s work offers some of the most fertile ground for feminist analysis within and outside of women’s studies courses. They offer for a wide range of courses a rich and meaningful way to analyze rigorously the role of dutiful daughter, the evolution of the U.S. health care system, and the complexity of family dynamics.","PeriodicalId":88071,"journal":{"name":"NWSA journal : a publication of the National Women's Studies Association","volume":"18 1","pages":"222 - 224"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/NWSA.2006.0003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66453951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we update the information and briefly report on new resources available for tracking the development of doctoral training in Women's Studies and gender studies. We also list titles of dissertations completed since the 2003 publication. As of summer 2005, there are sixteen graduate programs in the United States and Canada that grant Ph.D.s in Women's Studies. Programs at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and Indiana University (pending final university approval) are new since O'Barr and Shields (2003) identified twelve programs (ten free-standing Ph.D. programs; two joint-degree programs) plus the Union Institute, which has offered the interdisciplinary option for Ph.D.s in Women's Studies since 1964 (NWSA Journal 2003). A listserv for discussion of doctoral study in Women's Studies was established in late 2001 and, until fall 2005, was moderated by Cari Carpenter who received her Ph.D. in Women's Studies and English from the University of Michigan. Jillian Duquaine-Watson (jillian.duquainewatson@drake.edu), who received her Ph.D. in Women's Studies from the University of Iowa, has taken over as listserv moderator. Jillian is assistant professor in the Department for the Study of Culture and Society at Drake University. WSPhD-L is specifically aimed to address the needs of current women's studies Ph.D. students and recent recipients of the degree. Rosi Braidotti and Martine De Vos (2005) prepared a summary of the current state of women's studies Ph.D. programs in Europe for NWSA Journal. Their summary includes twelve graduate programs that responded to their invitation to contribute, but it is not an exhaustive list of European doctoral programs that offer advanced degrees in Women's Studies.","PeriodicalId":88071,"journal":{"name":"NWSA journal : a publication of the National Women's Studies Association","volume":"18 1","pages":"190 - 206"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69199611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because it challenges the status quo, questions assumptions about hierarchies and power, and encourages those typically portrayed as silent objects to become vocal subjects about their own experiences, feminist pedagogy provides an opportunity to help students learn about the experiences of the elderly as \"the other.\" This paper suggests that teaching about ageism involves three strategies: making students aware of ageist stereotypes, helping students learn how to analyze images and texts, and preparing students to advocate for change. Instructors can help students to think critically about ageist stereotypes and can encourage students to consider how to change social messages that position the elderly as pariahs.","PeriodicalId":88071,"journal":{"name":"NWSA journal : a publication of the National Women's Studies Association","volume":"18 1","pages":"85 - 98"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/NWSA.2006.0001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66453924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
