As we look back at the early history of industrial nursing, it is of interest to learn that the first nurse entered this field at the request of management itself, and not directly through medical or nursing channels. Over the 20 year period from 1895 to 1915, we find industrial nursing service organized in all types of industries, manufacturing concerns, department stores, banks and office buildings, all over the country. We also note a diversity of duties and responsibilities of these nurses. For the most part, the majority were concerned almost entirely with first-aid care to accident victims. Health services were occasional and sporadic. It was with the advent of Workmen's Compensation Legislation in the various states, that specific medical and nursing services were given a chance to develop. We could easily spend hours reviewing the various types of industrial nursing programs over a period of years, and in noting the achievements in the field during this period. However, I think it may be more interesting to hear comments from industry, itself, regarding industrial nursing services. The respiratory membranes are normally good barriers against infection by the ordinary bacteria which may be present in the mouth and throat, and on this account are part of our normal resistance to infection by these bacteria. A common effect of the cold virus on the respiratory membranes is to reduce or destroy temporarily this resistance to infection. When this happens, and the common bacteria are permitted to attack the depleted or altered membranes, we experience the complications Or sequelae of the cold.
