We provide three target applications in distributed cycle sharing applications, music information retrieval workflows and for workflow-based audio visual searching across distributed information servers. We argue that extensions are needed in existing toolkits to advance super peer topologies to support the caching of application data as well as adverts for specific applications. We discuss the Alchemist system that defines super peers style overlays for caching application-data by employing the use of dynamic groups, which are flexible in defining replicating, forwarding and security policies. This framework is built on top of existing technologies, such as P2PS and WSPeer and exploits standardised Web Services technologies as well as SOAP and more recently defined Web Services specifications. We present results to indicate the usefulness of such a data caching approach for distributing workflows and application data, and discuss future simulations that aim to sustain the evolution of the system.","PeriodicalId":87858,"journal":{"name":"Water & sewage works","volume":"41 1","pages":"13-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78129054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Workflow systems can automate many execution-level details and provide assistance in composing and validating workflows. However, there is still a significant effort involved in creating these workflows since they often represent collaborative and exploratory science experiments. Therefore, current practice is effective in producing results but not cost-effective for widespread adoption. Drawing from our previous research in computational workflows across scientific disciplines, this paper analyzes the tasks and overall process for designing these workflows. We discuss software engineering methodologies and their relevance to creating workflows as a unique kind of software artifact. We also discuss our ongoing work to make workflow applications more cost effective and lower the barriers for widespread adoption of workflow technologies.","PeriodicalId":87858,"journal":{"name":"Water & sewage works","volume":"2 1","pages":"53-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82001152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Autonomic Computing provides methodologies for managing run-time adaptations in managed systems. In this paper, we apply the monitoring, analysis, planning and execution (MAPE) model from autonomic computing to support the runtime modification of workflows with the aim of improving their performance. We systematically identify run-time adaptations and indicate how such behaviours can be captured using the MAPE model from the Autonomic Computing community. By characterising these as autonomic computing problems we make a proposal about how workflow adaptation can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":87858,"journal":{"name":"Water & sewage works","volume":"26 8 1","pages":"29-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73866391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today thereare a variety of workflow systems that provide an often disjoint set of capabilities and expose different workflow modeling semantics to the users. In this paper we examine the possibility of integrating two well-known workflow systems Kepler and Pegasus and examine the opportunities and challenges presented by such an integration. We illustrate the combined system on a workflow used as a basis of a provenance challenge.","PeriodicalId":87858,"journal":{"name":"Water & sewage works","volume":"21 1","pages":"21-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75141436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As adoption of the Grid increases so are the activities that people wish to conduct through it. The GRIDCC project is a European Union funded project addressing the issues of integrating instruments into the Grid. This increases the requirement of workflows and Quality of Service upon these workflows as many of these instruments have real-time requirements. In thispaper we present the workflow management service within the GRIDCC project which is tasked with optimising the workflows and ensuring that they meet the pre-defined QoS requirements specified upon them.","PeriodicalId":87858,"journal":{"name":"Water & sewage works","volume":"13 1","pages":"3-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82591074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
