All of the material used for this paper is from the Oncology Clinic of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Hospital. This work covers an eight year period, i. e. from the opening of the Oncology Clinic in the fall of the year 1930 to the end of the year 1938. In a study of several hundred papers in recent current medical literature dealing with hemangiomas, we found that few authors gave details of therapeutic technics and actual statistics of results. Here we report carefully prepared statistics and show that even though radium irradiation usually gives the best results of any form of therapy, there have been times when the cosmetic results were not entirely satisfactory. These tumors may be classified from the standpoint of their origin in the following anatomic structures: nasopharynx, soft palate, palatine tonsil, base of the tongue (valleculae), extrinsic part of the larynx (epiglottis, aryepiglottic folds, arytenoid), pharyngeal wall (lateral or posterior) and piriform sinus. In cases of early involvement it usually is possible for one to make use of a specific anatomic classification, but in many instances a growth has arisen at the junction of two or more anatomic parts, or in its later stages the disease has extended and involved several structures, so as to preclude any specific anatomic classification. For instance, it often is impossible to decide whether a growth should be classified as arising in the tonsil or in the soft palate, since both","PeriodicalId":87804,"journal":{"name":"Texas cancer bulletin","volume":"11 1","pages":"138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1938-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80283073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
