The present study was a cross‑sectional study collecting anthropometric measures among children and data using a parental survey in 2020‑2021 in private elementary schools. A total of 191 subjects were eligible for analysis. The body mass index of the children and parents was calculated. The perceived child weight status was compared to the actual weight status. Parental knowledge of obesity‑related health risks and sources of concerns was assessed using a scoring system. Quantitative variables were reported as average, standard deviation, first and third quartiles. Qualitative variables were reported as frequencies and percentages. Statistical tests were used to assess significance levels, set at P<0.05. More than half of the children were overweight (30%) or obese (25%). However, the parents underestimated their child's weight status (61%) and were unconcerned about them becoming overweight (52%), despite solid knowledge about the related health risks. The maternal weight status was associated with the underestimation of child weight (P=0.0068). Being overweight did not rank high on sources of parental concerns. It is thus suggested that parents need to be made aware of their child's weight status. Efforts are needed to spread awareness about childhood obesity health risks.","PeriodicalId":87378,"journal":{"name":"World Academy of Sciences journal","volume":"5 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134954393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method of assessing nutrition based on serum blood albumin levels is considered to be an objective one. However, due to the long half‑life, specificity is also controversial. The present study cross‑sectional study was conducted to assess the nutritional status of patients with ovarian cancer (OC) assessed according to the serum albumin levels of from 2018 to 2021. For this purpose, the medical records of 129 patients with OC were selected. As a result, the malnutrition rate by serum albumin accounted for 17.1%. The rate of malnutrition in patients with OC at stages III and IV (35.9%), was almost 5‑fold higher than that of patients with OC at stages I and II (7.9%). At the time of testing, post‑operative malnutrition accounted for 56.2%, >2‑fold higher than the pre‑operative malnutrition rate. Subclinical indicators, including the numbers of red blood cells, hematocrit and hemoglobin levels, neutrophil percentage, lymphocyte percentage, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and platelet counts, glucose and creatinine levels, Na<sup>+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>, Cl<sup>‑</sup> and total calcium levels were found to be significantly associated with the changes in nutritional status according to serum albumin levels. On the whole, the findings of the present study may assist healthcare professionals to improve the nutritional status of patients, and also suggests the possible use of serum albumin in assessing the nutritional status.","PeriodicalId":87378,"journal":{"name":"World Academy of Sciences journal","volume":"35 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136346677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the majority of cases can be effectively treated and cured, recurrences of <em>P. falciparum</em> malaria are not uncommon and can occur years following initial exposure. This phenomenon adds a new level of complexity to the management and prevention of the disease. The present study describes the compelling clinical case of a patient who contracted malaria despite not having been in an endemic region for over a decade. The patient had previously been infected and treated for the same disease. With low parasitemia, the patient was successfully treated with anti‑malarial drugs; however, certain aspects of his medical history remained unclear. The present study also discusses the possibility that this case represents <em>P. falciparum</em> recrudescence or cryptic malaria, drawing on existing literature to contextualize the findings. The case presented herein highlights the need for continued vigilance in the diagnosis and treatment of <em>P. falciparum</em> malaria, particularly in instances of recurrence. Furthermore, it underscores the ongoing challenges posed by this persistent and insidious disease.","PeriodicalId":87378,"journal":{"name":"World Academy of Sciences journal","volume":"2018 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135635971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
