Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and UV radiation at a wavelength of 580 nm were used to conduct the photocatalytic reaction of the solochrom violet dye. One of the factors looked into was the impact of the starting conditions. pH, the amount of original hydrogen peroxide, and the dye concentration time radiation were used. For hours, the kinetics and percentages of degradation were examined at various intervals. In general, it has been discovered that the photodegradation rates of the dye were greater when H2O2 and ZnO were combined with UV light. The best wavelength to use was determined. Modern oxidation techniques were proven to be very effective at degrading the majority of contaminants in wastewater. Using a spectrophotometer, the dye's photocatalytic browning was investigated. The theoretical calculation concentrated on the active site using the density functional theory technique and the Gaussian 09 program.","PeriodicalId":8687,"journal":{"name":"Baghdad Science Journal","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135570250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mitochondrial genes from NADH dehydrogenase (NAD) family have prominent roles in the identification of very similar strains G1 and G3. Thus, the present study mainly aimed to characterize the whole NAD1 gene (from the start codon to the stop codon) of hydatids isolated from humans. Hydatids were surgically isolated from the livers of patients, who are from Basrah and Maysan provinces, at Al-Sadir Teaching Hospital in Basrah province, Iraq. Protoscoleces were aseptically isolated from hydatid cysts and were used to extract DNA. Specific primers were employed to amplify the total NAD1 gene. A consensus sequence of nucleotides was separately generated from Basrah and Maysan sample sequences. Each consensus sequence had 1038 bp and it contained a start codon GTG at residues 87- 89 and a stop codon TAA at residues 978 – 980. The present study results displayed that each deduced amino acid sequence, predicated from a consensus sequence of nucleotides, had 297 amino acids. Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis revealed that each deduced amino acid sequence included a residue isoleucine (I188). This residue is only retained in the NAD1 protein of the G1 strain. The current study results also showed a predicated structural model of Basrah and Maysan NAD1 proteins and both of which had very similar homology models and the important residue I188 was located in the α10 helix. In total, for the first time in Iraq, this study characterized the whole NAD1 genes of E. granulosus protoscoleces and confirmed these NAD1 genes belonging to the G1 sheep strain.","PeriodicalId":8687,"journal":{"name":"Baghdad Science Journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135569235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, machine learning has been applied in various areas, including disease diagnosis, patient risk classification, customized treatment suggestions, and drug development. Machine learning algorithms can scrutinize vast quantities of data from electronic health records, medical images, and other sources to identify patterns and make predictions, which can support healthcare professionals and experts in making better-informed decisions, enhancing patient care, and determining a patient's health status. In this regard, the author opted to compare the performance of three algorithms (logistic regression, Adaboost, and naïve bayes) through the correct classification rate for diabetes prediction in order to ensure the effectiveness of accurate diagnosis. The dataset applied in this work is obtained from the Vanderbilt university institutional repository and is publicly available data. The study determined that three algorithms are very effective at prediction. Mainly, logistic regression and Adaboost had a classification rate above 92%, and the naive bayes algorithm achieved a classification rate above 90%.","PeriodicalId":8687,"journal":{"name":"Baghdad Science Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135570243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quercetin and gentisic acid are two important phenolic compounds found in plants which display many medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer. Determination of both compounds together in a binary mixture is not achieved yet with spectrophotometric methods. In this study, two simple, rapid and accurate derivative spectrophotometric methods were developed and used for simultaneous quantification of quercetin and gentisic acid in binary mixtures of Capparis spinosa L. methanolic leaves extract. The first technique relies on the zero-crossing approach (first and fourth order derivatives), while the second approach is based on using ratio spectra and first-order derivative spectrophotometry. The calibration curves of the two derivative spectrophotometric techniques are linear in the concentration ranges of 2.0-30 µg/mL and 4.0-80 µg/mL for quercetin and gentisic acid, respectively, whereas the recovery percentages ranged from 94.06% - 105.98% (quercetin) and 94.29% - 113.37% (gentisic acid). The developed methods were effectively used for the quantitative determination of both phenolic compounds in Capparis spinosa L. leaves.","PeriodicalId":8687,"journal":{"name":"Baghdad Science Journal","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135617354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research used 0.8:4:20 mmol ratios of template, monomer and cross-linking agents for the polymerisation in order to ensure an appropriate adsorption capacity. Benzoyl peroxide BPO was employed as the initiator for the functional monomer styrene C8H8 , cross-linked with Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate EGDMA C10H14O4, thereby creating MIP for Metformin(Met-MIP) that could be characterised with UV-Visible Spectrophotometry at 236nm, for pharmaceutical drugs and human serum. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for MIP drug. The elution process that was applied to the template (Met.) from the Met-MIP created cavities that were caused by the porogenic mixture solvents that were created from methanol, chloroform and acetic acid (70:20:10) mL respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity was 1.2320, 2.4448 µmol/g for two studies using 0.1 and 0.2 g weights of Met-MIP respectively. A solid-phase extraction (SPE) syringe packed with molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) was employed to selectively separate and pre-concentrate the Metformin in multiple pharmaceutical drugs from several sources. The human serum was based on the use of deionized water to dilute the serum, followed by the heating of the serum with methanol. Subsequently, a few drops hydrochloric acid 1M were applied to gate transparence solution and detect Metformin at UV region 236 nm by applying the standard addition method.","PeriodicalId":8687,"journal":{"name":"Baghdad Science Journal","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135617080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) bone densitometer is considered as the gold standard to measure bone mineral density (BMD). In Syria, the DXA is costly, not widely available and coupled with a strong reluctance among patients concerning exposure to ionizing radiation. On the other hand, several recent studies found that Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) is useful in diagnosing osteoporosis and giving accurate information about the qualities of bone. This study aims to design and implement a portable ultrasound bone densitometry to measure BMD. The device is portable (0.4 kg), much less expensive and does not have any harmful effect of ionizing radiation. The device contains a pair of ultrasound transducers HC-SR04 to send and receive ultrasound waves through the bone. The received signals were amplified and digitally recorded using the Arduino platform. The device was designed using a pre-designed model using CAD software, with wild range motion so it could be appropriate for many patients of different ages. The device was tested on many healthy individuals and patients of different sexes, aged 18–85 years, and also calibrated and validated with a known BMD value supplied by the DXA bone densitometer. The results demonstrated that our device is sensitive enough to distinguish between healthy and patient individuals by using low-cost instruments. Accordingly, the proposed device may have a good opportunity in the future to be considered an effective low-cost portable bone densitometer.","PeriodicalId":8687,"journal":{"name":"Baghdad Science Journal","volume":"15 24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135617942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although morbidity and mortality generally increase with age, it remains uncertain whether there is a correlation between age and IL-6 levels, thereby exacerbating the severity of COVID-19 in patients. The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between age and IL-6 levels in COVID-19 patients. The study was cross-sectional, analyzing laboratory and medical records of 3,171 COVID-19 patients who received treatment in 2021 at Saiful Anwar General Hospital. The Data analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Dunnett's Post Hoc, and Spearman Correlation tests. The patients were divided into four age groups: <20 years (1.29%), 20-40 years (18.10%), 40-60 years (43.74%), and >60 years (36.87%). The respective mean levels of IL-6 in each group were 39.44, 192.04, 217.27, and 252.59 pg/ml. A significant difference (p-value = 0.000) was observed in IL-6 levels between the <20 years age group and the other groups. Moreover, a significant positive correlation (p-value = 0.000) was identified between age group and IL-6 levels in COVID-19 patients, indicating higher IL-6 levels in older patients. In conclusion, there were differences in IL-6 levels based on age groups and age was positively correlated with IL-6 levels in COVID-19 patients.","PeriodicalId":8687,"journal":{"name":"Baghdad Science Journal","volume":"44 19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135569250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
