Participants were invited via social media posts to complete a short anonymous online survey during the 2-week window between the Level 4 and Level 3 lockdowns in May 2020. Of the 121 respondents who identified their gender, 98 were female, with just over one third of all respondents indicating their use of natural supplements had increased during lockdown in an effort to minimise the risk of falling ill with COVID-19. When supplements were taken, there was a wide perceived benefit that the supplements helped them in some way. Supplements were mainly purchased from supermarkets or pharmacies, with most people not telling their registered heath professional they were taking natural therapies or supplements. Twenty first century herbalists’ workarounds could be summed up by the saying ‘old herbs, new tricks’, with scope of changes being mainly about herbal selection, availability, preparations, validation, extraction methods and dosages. Naturopathy, on the other hand, has undergone a type of recrafting in the 21st century, and a re-discovery of its original basis or identity. Naturopathy being defined by its treatment modalities (e.g. herbal medicine, nutrition, homoeopathy, counselling, massage etc) has moved on to a definition based on its holistic philosophy, and uniquely codified principles of practice. It lays testament to one of the main characteristics of our practices, a specialised expertise about safe and effective natural medicine. It isn’t limited to the prescription of natural medicines (nutraceuticals and herbs), it also extends to other natural interventions and safe, person-centred and effective communication, which is more than just imparting information about high-risk health behaviours. We are trained in personal, sensitive and ethical communication that fosters autonomy and self-determination. These things together, adapted to individual needs, define our role. Given our clinical skills, naturopaths and herbalists are positioned alongside other health practitioners providing service, contributing to health, and meeting expressed public desires and health needs.
