Using a Shapley decomposition procedure to estimate the contribution of each driver in explaining the variation in mean and inequality of research performance, I find that for women, current placement is a more important driver of performance and inequality in performance compared to men. For men, co-authorship is the most important driver. Overall, my results suggest that networks are the key driver of performance and of inequality in performance. Stamp collectors’ motivations vary from the simple pursuit of leisure and recreation to financial investment and speculation. This study explores the demand for vintage U.S. commemorative stamps by examining the determinates of retail prices across alternative categories of sellers. Using regression analysis and a cross-sectional sample of the first 250 commemorative stamps issued by U.S. postal authorities, we estimate price equations for representative national dealers, regional dealers, and for electronic auction sites. The results indicate that production quantities, age, and specific attributes of individual stamp issues are the primary determinants of retail price. However, the pricing structures across categories of sellers are significantly different in a hierarchical manner indicating that dealers may successfully segment the collectable stamp market across different types of collectors but alternative explanations for our conclusions cannot be excluded without additional research.","PeriodicalId":85623,"journal":{"name":"The American economist","volume":"68 1","pages":"246 - 260"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48587341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most research focuses on the environmental consequences of sugarcane production, this paper examines the potential socioeconomic impact of a proposed sugarcane factory on a nearby (base) village by comparing it to a similar (treatment) village within the same region near an existing sugarcane factory. We find that treatment villagers have higher household income mainly due to their sugarcane-based village economy. They also disclose better perceived environmental quality while results for perceived health status are mixed. Yet, base villagers report higher perceived quality of life, likely due to factors beyond the socioeconomic conditions investigated in this study. Thus, the presence of a sugarcane factory, while socioeconomically favorable, may compromise other aspects of village life that contribute to its overall quality.","PeriodicalId":85623,"journal":{"name":"The American economist","volume":"67 1","pages":"254 - 281"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47138780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I randomize students in a large-enrollment introductory economics course into one of four treatments: for-credit practice problems only, information about successful peers’ study habits only, for-credit practice problems paired with peer information, and control. The 2x2 experimental design allows me to assess whether peer information and for-credit incentives act as complements or substitutes. I find that for-credit alone works significantly better than peer information alone to improve study effort. Interestingly, peer information works better for men than women. The interaction of the study incentives works best to improve study effort for women. The findings of this study inform micro-targeted educational choice architecture which could help narrow gender performance disparities in economics courses.
