Turki, Aboozar Soltani
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of monomolecular surface film (Agnique® MMF) as a \u0000new method against immature stages of Anopheles mosquitoes in an malaria-endemic area. \u0000Methods: Semi-field and field trials were designed to evaluate the efficacy of Agnique® MMF \u0000as a mosquito control method in Hormozgan Province, Iran. \u0000Results: In the semi-field trial, larval density was significantly reduced (91.80%) within \u000072 h post treatment with 0.47 mL/m2 of MMF. The results showed 100% inhibition of adult \u0000emergence at 0.47 mL/m2 for up to three weeks. Indeed, pupae were completely eliminated \u0000from all artificial ponds within one week post-treatment. In the field trial, An. stephensi with \u0000the frequency of 44% was the dominant species. Other collected species were An. d’thali (18%), \u0000An. turkhudi (12%), An. moghulensis (10%), An. superpictus (8%), An. culicifacies (5%), and \u0000An. fluviatilis (3%). In natural breeding places, 68.93% and 77% reductions were observed in \u0000larval density within 72 h post treatment with 0.47 and 0.94 mL/m2 dosages, respectively. \u0000Conclusions: In conclusion, MMF with the dosage of 0.47 mL/m2 could be practically used \u0000as an effective larvicide against anopheline mosquitoes in malarious areas of Iran and other \u0000countries in the Middle East. MMF not only is an efficient mosquito and midge larvicide and \u0000pupicide, but also can be used as a main component of an Integrated Vector Management (IVM) \u0000strategy for controlling the vectors of mosquito-borne diseases.

It is caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) of the genus Alphavirus from the Togaviridae family. Since the 1952 Tanzania outbreak, CHIKV has caused outbreaks in various parts of Africa. Major CHIK outbreaks were reported from India in 1963–1964. Since its first isolation in Kolkata in 1963, there had been reports from different parts of India viz. Vellore, Chennai, Nagpur[1]. In the western part of the country, major outbreaks with high morbidity were reported from Barsi, Solapur District, Maharashtra in 1973[2]. Subsequently, in the absence of either active or passive surveillance, it seemed that the virus had disappeared from the country until the end of 2005. However, large scale outbreaks of fever caused by this virus in several states of India including Maharashtra in 2005–2006 have confirmed its reemergence. In the western part of the country, major outbreak with high morbidity was reported in 2005–2006[1,3-5]. Thereafter, sporadic cases continue to be recorded in Maharashtra State[6]. The present study was conducted to investigate the CHIK outbreak in rural Talegaon Dhamdhere Town of Pune City in Western Maharashtra in October–November 2012.

Trypanosomiasis, a zoonosis, is a haemoprotozoan disease of domestic and wild animals caused by Trypanosoma, the extraerythrocytic haemoprotozoan parasite transmitted by Glossina spp. and infected meat[2,3]. Canine trypanosomiasis is a devastating disease leading to anaemia, pyrexia, pale mucous membrane, corneal opacity, infertility, abortions and death if not treated[4-6].
