Social problems, such as human trafficking, run deep into the fabric of a country. Any efforts to combat human trafficking at national levels need to consider the interconnectedness of systems, thus, the micro, mezzo, and macro levels and the interactions between these levels need to be considered. The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Prevention Act of 2000 ranks countries on three tiers when it comes to their efforts to prevent human trafficking. Sri Lanka is currently on trafficking Tier 2 watch list country. This paper provides a detailed context and analysis of the context of trafficking in Sri Lanka and identifies gaps in the existing services and a context for a theory of change based on the gaps in services. It also gives a comprehensive action plan for a national-level social change utilizing a multi-systemic and multi-stakeholder approach. Recommendations for human service workers hoping to work in developing countries are provided.","PeriodicalId":85530,"journal":{"name":"Social development issues","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70395695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study utilized the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) 2015 to analyze the findings. PAYS collected the data from youth in the 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades on substance use perceptions and attitudes. The data were collected in odd years. Risk factors that showed important effects on youth alcohol use in the past 30 days were: (1) Community: laws and norms favorable toward drug use and perception of accessibility to drugs; (2) Family: family management, family history of antisocial behavior, and parental attitudes that favor drugs; (3) School: academic failure; and (4) Peer/Individual: all risk factors recognized by PAYS except depression and attitudes toward antisocial behavior. The only protective factor that showed significant effect on youth alcohol use in the past 30 days is family opportunities for involvement. This study also provides implications for social welfare policies, social work practices, education, and future research.","PeriodicalId":85530,"journal":{"name":"Social development issues","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70396016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children (<i>N</i> = 526, <i>M</i> age = 7.95, <i>SD</i> = .33) reported on need for approval and teachers reported on social engagement. Approach NFA (motivation to gain approval) predicted more positive engagement and less conflictual engagement and disengagement. Conversely, avoidance NFA (motivation to avoid disapproval) predicted less positive engagement and more conflictual engagement and disengagement. Some results differed by gender. This study suggests that social motivation contributes to children's peer relationships, providing a specific target for interventions to optimize social health.</p>","PeriodicalId":85530,"journal":{"name":"Social development issues","volume":"23 2","pages":"376-394"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4011890/pdf/nihms-501592.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32332592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ninety-one preschool children participated in a longitudinal project examining children's reactivity and regulatory behaviors as predictors of internalizing problems and positive and negative social behavior in the classroom. Children who paired negative emotion expression with disengagement during a laboratory task showed higher levels of internalizing problems and more negative social behavior in the classroom six months later. Positive emotion expression paired with engagement during a laboratory task predicted more positive social behavior in the classroom six months later. Physiological reactivity and regulation also predicted children's social behavior in the classroom. Findings suggest that preschool children with maladaptive reactivity and regulatory patterns may be at greater risk for internalizing problems even in early childhood.</p>","PeriodicalId":85530,"journal":{"name":"Social development issues","volume":"23 2","pages":"250-266"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/sode.12049","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32539221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
