The species composition, abundance and biomass were determined for the spring, summer and autumn-winter seasons. Sixty-one Crustacea and Rotifera species belonging to different ecological groups (pelagic, littoral-thicket, bottom and eurybionts) were identified. Seasonal changes in the structure of zooplankton communities were demonstrated. The species diversity and quantity were the highest in August. The pollution rate of the lakes was assessed based on the indicator-species composition. It was determined that the water in lakes Chetyryohverstnoe (S = 1.42) and Lamba (S = 1.45) belonged to the oligosaprobic type and class II of water purity, while Lake Karjer (S = 1.58) fell into the betamesosaprobic type and class III.","PeriodicalId":85292,"journal":{"name":"Polish ecological studies","volume":"13 1","pages":"69-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78198007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study of seasonal changes in plankton became urgent due to the changes in climate and temperature regime observed in the recent decades. Mean annual characteristics of seasonal changes in the composition and structure of zooplankton are described based on the 30-year research. The relationship between seasonal changes in zooplankton structure and hydrological and temperature conditions in Petrozavodsk Bay of Lake Onega are presented.","PeriodicalId":85292,"journal":{"name":"Polish ecological studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"63-68"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79264854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The longitudinal dynamics of benthic communities’ structure is weak due to the stony-bottomed riffles almost throughout the rivers. Local factors can cause significant changes in the structure of macrozoobenthos. Thus, the communities with high level of filter-feeders biomass (net-weaving caddis fly larvae, the midge larvae, bivalves) are formed in the river sites downstream from the drainage lakes. In the areas affected by salty sea waters (parts of the river mouth), macrozoobenthos structure is significantly depleted. Local landscape features should be considered when describing the longitudinal changes in macrozoobenthos structure of rivers.","PeriodicalId":85292,"journal":{"name":"Polish ecological studies","volume":"61 1","pages":"29-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88782804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodology for determining a thermotolerance range, a temperature zone of normal vital activity and pessimal temperatures, based on the data analysis of distribution of cladocerans in a thermal gradient installation, is proposed. The range of final elected temperatures (FET) (13.4–25.4 о С), corresponding to the optimum temperatures for growth and development of cladocerans, is indicated. The temperature zone of normal vital activity (>7.0 and <29.0 о С), pessimal temperature range (4.0–7.0 о С and 29.0–32.0 о С) and temperature limits of species tolerance (4.0–32.0 о С), coinciding with the field observations of S. vetulus populations, are calculated.","PeriodicalId":85292,"journal":{"name":"Polish ecological studies","volume":"114 1","pages":"20-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86782113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The adaptations always involve multiple aspects and levels – from the molecular to the behavioral. The most important adaptations to low temperatures are: the movement of water from the intracellular to the extracellular compartments, so that the molecular weight of the intracellular fluid increases and its freezing point shifts downwards, preventing an intracellular freezing, ensured by the synthesis of anti-freeze compounds; the transition from saturated to unsaturated fatty acids, which is a critical mechanism for the membrane lipids functioning; as well as the synthesis of more flexible proteins. The most crucial component of the algae adaptation is their variable thermal resistance and an increase in the content of photosynthetic pigments as the daylight duration decreases. The reserves necessary for survival during the Polar Night are accumulated in the summer season. Cryoflora adaptations are studied. Some essential adaptations occur in oogenesis. The synthesis of fats in the yolk increases considerably, enabling a transition from the primitive ontogeny in the larval stage to a more advanced, direct ontogeny, which meets the conditions of high latitudes better. An asynchronous type of oogenesis remains during the transition from a repeat to single spawning.","PeriodicalId":85292,"journal":{"name":"Polish ecological studies","volume":"78 1","pages":"3-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83744186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
