Methods: Using a multi-staged cluster sampling methodology, this study evaluated 4498 adults aged 20 or more, from 2636 households, 79 provinces and 17 regions. The survey instrument was a validated interviewer-assisted questionnaire. Fasting blood sample was collected for uric acid determination and analyzed using a standardized machine. Results: The population included 2142 men and 2356 women. The mean SU level for the whole population was 5.5 mg/dl (5.47-5.59); 6.2 mg/dl (6.15- 6.31) for males and 4.8 mg/dl (4.71-4.85) for females. Hyperuricemia was found in 28.4% of the general population, 31.7% of males and 17.3% of females. SU values in men were higher for all age groups compared to those in women. For women, there was increasing SU value with age and with onset of menopause. The mean SU level for individuals with defined co-morbidities (the","PeriodicalId":85270,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of internal medicine","volume":"46 1","pages":"273-278"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70066108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The exact cause of reactive arthritis is unknown. It occurs most commonly in men before the age of 40. It may follow an infection with Chlamydia, Campylobacter, Salmonella or Yersinia. Certain genes may make you more prone to the syndrome. The diagnosis is based on symptoms. The goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms and treat any underlying infection. Reactive arthritis may go away in 3 - 4 months, but symptoms may return over a period of several years in up to a half of those affected. The condition may become chronic. Preventing sexually transmitted diseases and gastrointestinal infection may help prevent this disease. Wash your hands and surface areas thoroughly before and after preparing food.","PeriodicalId":85270,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of internal medicine","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70066471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prefilled, disposable pens have the advantage of simplicity, with minimal training and attention required and these offer improvements in compliance, freedom and flexibility. Objective: The survey assessed doctor preference in prescribing insulin in a FlexPen™ in diabetes patients in the Philippines under normal clinical practice conditions. The data was based from observations on the use of NovoMix® 30 FlexPen™ (Biphasic Insulin Aspart 30). Data was collected from 256 doctors who were specialised in treating patients with diabetes and had their clinics in the Philippines. A Doctor Preference Questionnaire was developed to assess doctor preference in specific terms of ease of learning and teaching use of FlexPen™, time spent for patient training in use of FlexPen™, ease of setting up the required dose of FlexPen™, DoctorEs satisfaction of shifting from any other device to FlexPen™, confidence that the correct amount of insulin will be injected, feedback about the NovoFine® 30G needles, overall experience with FlexPen™. Results: In total, 256 doctors participated and completed the doctor satisfaction questionnaires. Majority of doctors 62.1% felt learning/ teaching the use of FlexPen™ to the patients was „very easy‰; and 66.8% healthcare professionals (doctor or their staff) spent less than 10 minutes to train the patients on how to use FlexPen™. About 96% doctors responded that it is very easy or easy to set up the required dose and dose correction using FlexPen™. About (98.8%) doctors were confident or very confident that their patients will inject the correct dosage of insulin using FlexPen™. Almost all doctors (98.4%) satisfied or very satisfied about the patient shifting from other insulin devices to FlexPen™; 39.5% doctors rated the design of FlexPen™ as excellent; 55.5% rated it as good; while 74.6% doctors rated the overall experience of FlexPen™ as excellent. Conclusion: The participating doctors showed high degree of acceptance of Flexpen™. The overall experience of Flexpen™ was excellent.","PeriodicalId":85270,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of internal medicine","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70066509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research design and methods: This is a descriptive, case control study done from April 2002 to January 2003. Fifty (50) consecutive DM patients were seen and assessed after 75 grams OGTT based on demographic data: age, sex, family history and body mass index (BMI). Patients were divided: group 1-DM, group 2-impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), group 3hyperinsulinemia only (insulin levels of more than 20 U/ml) and group 4-normal Results: There is significant difference in the insulin secretion among the groups compared with the normal subjects. (p<0.025) Multiple comparison between groups showed there is a significant high insulin level (p=0.05) in groups 1, 2 and 3 when compared to normal subjects (group 4). Conclusion: The mean insulin concentration after 2 hours of 75 grams glucose showed significant difference among the group and higher than the normal subjects. The mean insulin of the paired groups (diabetics, IGT, hyperinsulinemia) was not different except those mean insulin compared with group 4(normal). Although risk factors for HCC are already established, significance of risk factors may vary among regions. Diabetes has also not been examined as a risk factor among Filipinos. Methodology: This is a descriptive study with data collection done through chart review. All charts with the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma admitted from 2001 to 2006 were retrieved from the Medical Records Section. Participants included all adult hepatocellular carcinoma patients, diagnosed with HCC either by: (1) biopsy or (2) mass > 2cm and elevated ?-fetoprotein >200. Demographic data, risk factors, and laboratory exams were collated. Descriptive statistics were generated using SPSS 15.0. Results: Two hundred twenty two patients were included in the study. Males outnumbered females (3.5:1). Majority were older than 50 years old. The most common symptom is abdominal pain. Two thirds had a history of drinking alcohol. Almost half were smokers. Thirty eight patients (40.0%) had previous hepatitis B and 66 patients (52.3%) had chronic Hepatitis B. Only 3 (6.2%) patients had hepatitis C infection. Two thirds had no evidence of cirrhosis. Thirteen percent of the population had diabetes mellitus while 20% of the HBsAg-negative patients had diabetes mellitus. Eighty seven percent were in the advanced stage and 11.7% were terminal stage. Conclusion: The most common risk factors for HCC are still hepatitis B infection and alcohol drinking. Diabetes mellitus deserves to be investigated as an important contributing factor to the development of HCC, especially in HBsAg-negative patients. Most patients belonged to late stages of the disease but a selection bias is recognized. Our study indicates the need for screening patients at risk so early-stage disease can be detected. They were given questionnaires to determine their baseline knowledge (multiple choice objective questionnaires) and attitudes (Liker-scale questionnaire) regarding their implementation of breast exam in the field. During the seminar, they were taught the Mamma-Care technique of breast examination with the aid of a videotape and lecture demonstration. They were then asked to examine silicone breast models which contain lumps of varying sizes (2 cm), mobility and hardness. Their sensitivity (through positive lumps detected by examination/total number of lumps in the breast model) in detecting lumps was then evaluated. Correct pretest knowledge on breast cancer symptoms, risk factors, treatment and screening were 83%, 64%, 86%, and 82%, respectively, which improved after training for 93%, 75%, 93%, and 92%, respectively. Trends in attitudes regarding implementation of breast exam were favorable. Sensitivity rates were 100% (33 nurses/midwives), 80% (48 n/m), 60% (n/m), 20% (17 n/m), and 0% (2 n/m).
