It focuses on both my presentation and discussions I had with delegates at the conference and since. I am not an academic and did not set out to present a learned paper. However, many of my clients are FE colleges with substantial HE provision and my perspective is that of the entrepreneur/businessman with a foot in the FHE world. For many years FE has had strong links with employers and the Employer Engagement agenda is a natural extension of their commercial work; however for many in HE, linking academia with commerce is not a natural priority and leads to certain tensions. My aim was to introduce a pragmatic approach to employer engagement that would provoke discussion and effect behavioural change.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"1 1","pages":"29 - 32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79001308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It then uses a published, ‘specific key skills’ statement, which lists seven basic skill attributes (such as numeracy, ICT etc) on a year-on-year approach (corresponding to entry level to university and at the end of each of three years on an ‘English’ university programme). Possible methods of modification for GEES subjects, by the addition of a further two attributes, are then outlined. An example for one year is presented as one of four yearly lists. Assessment is then linked with the skills associated with more specific elements that are included in these nine attributes. Together, skills and assessment might form part of an audit. Ways of explicitly embedding skills in a programme, using learning designs for activities and tasks and by the identification of ‘skill objects’, are then explored. Skill objects can be matched to one or several of the listed skill attributes or elements. Examples are given to show how this concept might be used at a departmental level.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"122 1","pages":"56 - 62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87589255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It showed that the UK lagged behind many other western economies in the achievement of basic and intermediate skills, so that there is a considerable deficit to be filled before enough of the population are even ready to embark upon higher level skills. Leitch set challenging targets for getting 40% of the population qualified to level four by 2020, and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) have increased that target to 45%. For the academic years 2006/7, 2007/8, the Higher Education Academy (HEA) identified Employer Engagement as a priority theme, and it is one of seven in its Strategic Plan for 2008/9. This paper gives a brief overview of the HEA employer engagement (EE) focus.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"9 1","pages":"11 - 12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89399130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By supporting lifelong learning, Universities and colleges provide employers and employees with the skills and qualities they need for economic productivity and growth, but this can only happen effectively when the HE sector works in partnership with employers. This paper investigates and assesses the value of student-employer engagement in the discipline of environmental sciences (ES), focussing on three key themes: othe skills, attributes and knowledge developed by environmental science students during their studies, compared to the expectations of employers othe enhancement of student employability through work-placements othe relationship between Higher Education Institutions and employers. Through addressing the identified gaps in skills, attributes, knowledge and expectations, it is clear that employer engagement activities and work placements can be a valuable means of improving the employability profiles of students whilst ensuring the professional relevance of environmental science degree courses. Although the study focuses on environmental sciences, it is anticipated the findings will enable the wider academic community to respond to the changing needs and expectations of its students and employers.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"27 6 1","pages":"16 - 20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83553798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Department of Geography and Development Studies at the University of Chester this agenda is addressed through an approach which focuses mainly on curriculum content, student reflection and careers awareness. One aspect of the latter is the use of graduate/ undergraduate employability conferences, at which alumni recount their ‘stories’ since leaving the Department. Student feedback suggests that these type of events can help to expand fairly restricted ‘careers imaginations’ evident on arrival at University and confirm the longer-term value of the programmes that are being studied.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"40 1","pages":"33 - 36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85073505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper explores the range of opportunities for GEES graduates to apply their knowledge and skills, not only in oil and gas contexts, but also to show the cross-over into wind and wave energy that have comparable require-ments. It is based on the presentation delivered, and subsequent discussion at the GEES Subject Centre Conference, July 2008, themed on employ-ability, employer engagement and enterprise. The majority of questions from the floor were focussed on the how GEES graduates ‘fit’ into the Oil and Gas Industry.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"367 1","pages":"25 - 28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76562432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The successful achievement of this meets with many challenges, including growing pressure on staff resources and ensuring that students appreciate the ‘employability relevance’ of the skills and content covered during their course. Increasing the ‘employability context’ of a course can be efficiently achieved by focussing on assessment design, which also provides additional benefits. This article outlines and evaluates a number of strategies for embedding employability context through assessment design. By adopting similar assessment strategies into existing course material, employment expectations of graduates and employers can be met without the need for major revisions. In addition, as assessment is often the major focus of students’ activities, a focus on assessment design ensures that the ‘real worldness’ of the exercises, content and/or skills of a course is appreciated by all students.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"12 1","pages":"64 - 67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90843050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nine organisations were visited, leading to the development of a list of factors that are seen as essential or desirable skills for successful forecasters. The experience has boosted the knowledge and confidence of both the author and careers colleagues in the shared teaching of the careers component of a compulsory Part 2 module on the Meteorology BSc. The benefits include better-prepared students and those related to the development of personal contact between the author and recruiters.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"87 1","pages":"37 - 38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73620571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He discussed the lessons that could be learned by both Higher Education and employers about recruitment and retention of current and future generations. However, he also acknowledged that Generational Theory is contested knowledge, suffering from an over-use of generational labels and its current ‘in-vogue’ adoption by the media. Paul’s keynote encouraged me to investigate Generational Theory a little further, and what follows is a summary of my understanding (as a relative newcomer) of the theory and a few thoughts on where it may lead us in terms of working with students.","PeriodicalId":85255,"journal":{"name":"People & the planet","volume":"15 1","pages":"13 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85930469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
