This paper examines rates and trends in this cause of death and discusses some of the main factors that help to explain the situation. Organized and common crime, youth gangs and the institutional response thereto (or lack thereof) have played a major role in the increase or the persistently high levels of homicide in the fertile ground created by poverty, inequality, lack of opportunity and, in some cases, political instability and weakened States. The climate of impunity that sometimes exists has resulted in the proliferation of homicide in public and private spaces. A cross-sectional and descriptive comparative study was conducted using official data from Mexico’s Secretariat of Health, obtained through the Epidemiological Surveillance System for Viral Respiratory Disease (SISVER) based on information from 475 public and private sector monitoring units. The reference period was from 21 February 2020–28 February 2021. The study showed that the highest number of diagnosed cases was among Mexican and migrant men, foreign-born patients were younger, and the most common nationalities were from the United States, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Colombia. Progress has been made in this area in recent years, with the creation of a national registry of femicides recorded in cases before the courts and the improvement in the quality of data on intentional murders of women. However, the data for these systems comprise series of less than six years, femicide rates by province only and a limited set of sociodemographic variables. The aim of this paper is to provide a detailed characterization of femicides in Argentina in the period 2002–2018. Schaefer","doi":"10.18356/16810333-48-112-9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18356/16810333-48-112-9","url":null,"abstract":"This article presents a sociospacial analysis of the urban transformation that has occurred in the Paraguayan city of Encarnación, which sits across the border from Posadas, Argentina, in the light of the significant changes to the city’s riverfront resulting from the Yacyretá hydroelectric plant, built jointly by the two countries. A descriptive and documentary analysis is conducted on how complementary coastal development works and real estate and local development agents played a role in the emergence of new urban processes that shaped the territory.
