People with this condition often experience easy bruising, long-lasting nosebleeds, and excessive bleeding or oozing following an injury, surgery, or dental work. Mild forms of von Willebrand disease may become apparent only when abnormal bleeding occurs following surgery or a serious injury. Women with this condition typically have heavy or prolonged bleeding during menstruation (menorrhagia), and some may also experience reproductive tract bleeding during pregnancy and childbirth. In severe cases of von Willebrand disease, heavy bleeding occurs after minor trauma or even in the absence of injury (spontaneous bleeding). Symptoms of von Willebrand disease may change over time. Increased age, pregnancy, exercise, and stress may cause bleeding symptoms to become less frequent.","PeriodicalId":85129,"journal":{"name":"Mayo Clinic women's healthsource","volume":"4 3 1","pages":"6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/9781119210771.ch8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43488917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I am skeptical of piriformis syndrome (PS). I think it is a rare condition. When the concept was first birthed, it was based on the idea that there are causes of sciatica other than a herniated disc. At the time, within standard medical thinking this was an advance. I am using the term sciaticaloosely, the way patients use it: any pain or abnormal sensation in the buttock, hamstring or posterior leg.","PeriodicalId":85129,"journal":{"name":"Mayo Clinic women's healthsource","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69622096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I was somewhat relieved to find out that my life-long tea and coffee habit was not necessarily bad for me. I started drinking Darjeeling tea daily at an early age because my family received an annual gift of Darjeeling tea from a local tea-taster. When I moved to Palo Alto CA in 1981, I found the Printer’s Inc. bookstore where I was introduced to morning espresso in the form of a cappuccino on a daily basis.","PeriodicalId":85129,"journal":{"name":"Mayo Clinic women's healthsource","volume":"1 1","pages":"75-80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70432822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is prone to several very distinct pathologies, some of which are extremely common such as autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs). AITDs are conditions in which the immune system attacks the body’s own thyroid gland which leads to a deregulation in thyroid hormones production. Because these hormones are used almost everywhere in the body, AITDs can have widespread, serious effects and many symptoms. AITDs can be broken down into two classes: iGraves' disease (GD) characterized by hyperthyroidism and ii-Autoimmune Hypothyroidism, where the major clinical form is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). In HT, the antibodies against thyroid peroxidase or thyroglobulin appear characteristically in the patients' sera, while tissue damage due to T cell-mediated cytotoxicity usually contributes to gradual development of hypothyroidism.","PeriodicalId":85129,"journal":{"name":"Mayo Clinic women's healthsource","volume":"5 12 1","pages":"6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5772/32719","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70922106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
