Two-thirds of family law cases referred (67%) were found to have grandparental involvement. Grandparents were referred to in 77% of all court reports and mentioned specifically in the recommendations in 37% of these. Over one quarter (27%) of the clinicians stated that they would have made different recommendations had the grandparents not been involved. More than one-third of the parents and three-quarters of their children had actually lived in the grandparents' home during or after the parental separation. Grandparents may have an important role in actualizing the best interests of children involved in painful and disruptive disputes.","PeriodicalId":84984,"journal":{"name":"Journal of divorce","volume":"13 1","pages":"1-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J279V13N03_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subjects of divorced/separated parents were compared to subjects from intact homes, on a number of indicators of self-concept and mental health. Comparisons were also made between male and female subjects whose parents were divorced or separated. Tests of significance revealed significant differences between the sexes on two indicators of self-concept and two indicators of mental health. It was concluded that negative effects of divorce or separation for Black males and females may vary along specific dimensions which may be masked when these subjects are combined and compared with subjects from intact homes.","PeriodicalId":84984,"journal":{"name":"Journal of divorce","volume":"13 1","pages":"79-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J279V13N03_07","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Areas covered include relationships with children of various parentages (his, hers and theirs) effects of parent (step) child relationships on the spousal relationship, relationships with former mates, economic circumstances, sources of emotional support, marital adjustment and the advice that remarried respondents offer to people considering remarriage. While a number of difficulties generally unique to remarried couples are no lower than those of first married couples, perhaps because of the contrast with problems divorced parents experienced before they remarried. The marital adjustment of couples in families in which the father had custody of his prior marriage children was significantly lower than in other remarried families.","PeriodicalId":84984,"journal":{"name":"Journal of divorce","volume":"13 1","pages":"121-144"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J279V13N02_06","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using interview data from a national sample of married persons, parental divorce, it is found, has little associaton with the various aspects of family relations examined. It does relate, however, to several dimensions of the adult offsprings' marriages. In contrast, marital unhappiness in the parental generation is strongly related to both the family and marital relations of their married children. The findings indicate that remaining in an unhappy marriage has many more adverse, and stonger, effects on the next generation than parental divorce does.","PeriodicalId":84984,"journal":{"name":"Journal of divorce","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J279V13N02_02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Responses from the mother and oldest child in these families were obtained on the Structural Family Interaction Scale, Family Environment Scale, and a Questionnaire on Social Support. Members from both single-parent groups perceived their families as significantly more disengaged and inflexible, and higher in unresolved conflict than members from \"intact\" families. No differences were found between the early and late single-parent groups. The results were in contrast to descriptions taken from the divorce literature which suggest that single-parent families within the first year of separation are more enmeshed than single-parent families separated 2-5 years. However, the results did suggest that disengagement between family m...","PeriodicalId":84984,"journal":{"name":"Journal of divorce","volume":"13 1","pages":"1-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J279V13N02_01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data from both self-report and clinical ratings from 121 families were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression in order to determine predictors of parental hostility, conflict, and communication 2-3 years after the separation. Family structures variables such as ages and numbers of children, as well as SES differences between parents were included in the model. Results show that where both parents have more frequent access to their children, they communicate with each other more frequently, but also experience greater hostility and conflict in their relationship. A second result indicates that extreme levels of parental verbal or physical abuse is predicted by extreme abuse during the marital years and is not related to custody or visitation arrangements, nor to family structure variables 2-3 years post-separation.","PeriodicalId":84984,"journal":{"name":"Journal of divorce","volume":"13 1","pages":"145-157"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J279V13N02_07","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They also were better off financially, had more stable and satisfying jobs, and had experienced less psychological stress and more psychological satisfaction in the previous months. These factors were related to better adjustment for both men and women. In addition, men who were better adjusted spent more hours at work and had children who were better adjusted; women who were better adjusted were more likely to own or rent their home alone rather than with their ex-spouse, had moved away after the separation or divorce, and felt that they had received more social support from their friends and family after the divorce.","PeriodicalId":84984,"journal":{"name":"Journal of divorce","volume":"13 1","pages":"75-94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J279V13N02_04","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
