Men’s constantly\u0000varying work period, about ten days sea time to\u0000every forty-eight hours ashore, forces wives to become\u0000reluctant matriarchs, a role they must drop when their\u0000husbands land. Incongruity of expectations and behaviour\u0000is thus built in. Successful adjustment to sea-time roles by\u0000both is often dysfunctional to family stability, and to the\u0000health and recreation of the labour force. Women’s double-role\u0000strategies are described using ethnographic and interview\u0000data. These strategies vary with the historically\u0000changing structures of the industry, kinship and community;\u0000with their stage in the life cycle; with the expectations\u0000of husband and wife; and with the constraints imposed by\u0000vessel schedules and company policies.

Direct age standardization\u0000of fertility rates revealed lower fertility for\u0000women in polygynous unions, as measured by maternal\u0000age and marital duration. Indirect techniques of mortality\u0000estimation indicated higher childhood mortality for offspring\u0000of polygynous marriages. The underlying rationale\u0000for these demographic differentials is attributed to Toposa\u0000social structure, including the economic value of women,\u0000gerontocracy and residential patterns.

In some cases the spirit of the deceased is\u0000"seen" or "known" to enter a woman’s body to reincarnate\u0000as a child. This "knowledge" determines the way in which\u0000Dene-tha represent themselves to themselves and to each\u0000other.
