The proposal is that the fundamental issue of life is the search for its meaning. Helping migrants to construct and solidify the existential foundation of their lives within the framework of unfamiliar cities which are not their hometowns, so that their spirits have a place to rest, their concerns are addressed, their hearts are at peace, their souls are tranquil, they have a place to live and develop, and they obtain spiritual satisfaction, is the final destination in resolving the issue of the integration of migrants.","PeriodicalId":84447,"journal":{"name":"Chinese sociology and anthropology","volume":"29 1","pages":"38 - 61"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85289341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The thirty-year period divides into three stages reflecting the main phases of Guangdong province's regional economic development. Policies in the three stages evolve from control and guidance of random migrations, through attempts at orderly management of migrant populations, to overall planning of migrant population management. The policy adjustments have affected the relationship between migrants and the general public in the places of migration, as illustrated by changing portrayals of migrants in the Guangzhou Daily. Guangdong is a forerunner in China's reform and opening up, and the adjustments in Guangdong's population policies offer useful reference points for other Chinese regions.","PeriodicalId":84447,"journal":{"name":"Chinese sociology and anthropology","volume":"25 1","pages":"24 - 6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75283868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quantitative analysis reveals that three types of Chinese new migrants—labor migrants, intellectual migrants, and entrepreneurial migrants—have different housing conditions. Marked disparities in housing facility quality among the six cities have also been identified. The housing conditions of new migrants are mainly determined by socioeconomic factors and by institutional factors such as hukou status. In addition, housing facility quality is primarily affected by hukou status, income, educational levels, marriage, age, and migrant type, but hukou is the major determinant.","PeriodicalId":84447,"journal":{"name":"Chinese sociology and anthropology","volume":"34 1","pages":"70 - 89"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87546329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many reasons for migrant workers from the countryside to switch jobs, but young migrant workers from the countryside are more likely to switch jobs frequently. Irrational factors affect job switching, and these factors affect the careers of migrant workers from the countryside. Switching jobs has become a way for migrant workers in the new era to pursue self-realization as well as a way for them to express themselves and has ultimately become an action strategy for migrant workers from the countryside.","PeriodicalId":84447,"journal":{"name":"Chinese sociology and anthropology","volume":"33 1","pages":"51 - 69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77305946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
