{"title":"Seventeen years of legalized abortion in Singapore.","authors":"S Saw","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>\"In this paper we first discuss the two-stage process of legalizing induced abortion in Singapore, the initial legalization to make it available on a restrictive basis in 1970 and the complete liberalization to make it available on demand from 1975 onwards. The incidence of abortions registered in the last seventeen years and the major characteristics of aborters are analysed. The impact of abortion on the rapid decline of fertility to below-replacement level is highlighted, and the need to reduce abortion by amending the more liberal aspects of the law are considered at the end of the paper.\"</p>","PeriodicalId":84274,"journal":{"name":"Biology and society : the journal of the Eugenics Society","volume":"5 2","pages":"63-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22036876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The level of education of respondents is generally low and appears to have a negative effect on knowledge, approval, and use of family planning. Breast feeding is widespread but not many respondents practiced it as a method of family planning. While there is limited knowledge and some approval of family planning, a desire for large families continues and there is relatively little practice of family limitation. The prospects for a decrease in fertility in the near future is not encouraging.\"</p>","PeriodicalId":84274,"journal":{"name":"Biology and society : the journal of the Eugenics Society","volume":"4 4","pages":"183-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22025944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The repeat aborters started their sexual activities at an earlier age. They were married for a longer period, had more past pregnencies and more children, but their marital adjustments were slightly less satisfactory. There were no differences in education, housing, and religious practices among the three groups. The aborters knew more methods of contraceptive practices, but they tended to use unreliable methods.
